Muscle man

I say H0ughy's recent ad for a CCD camera with stuff, and a 'muscle plate'. and wondered, what's a muscle plate good for? Is it just a thicker piece of metal for joining the bits together? Is it meant to reduce flexure and should it be considered a 'good thing to have' for all setups?
