Foam Dome Obs

This foam domed observatory is for sale. Pickup Only.

This sale includes the control computer, the automation hardware and everything apart from the pier and the concrete floor.

The PC is an AMD machine and is under 12months old. It runs on a solid state disk and contains all the software to run the dome and everything inside it.

It measures a little over 2 meters outside and 1.8meters inside. So it will fit almost anywhere and can handle a 12" F4 newt inside.

Contact me if your are interested and come check it out. A pale fingered truck will be required to lift the top and bottom pieces up and over the fence.

$2500

Looks like a bargain for someone. I have been thinking about a dome, you wouldn't by any chances have the plans of the dome for sale?

Hi Robin
the dome looks like it is one piece. any idea of the weight?
Do the sides break down into smaller bits?

Greg, last time it was apart, my son and I lifted the dome onto the wall easily. I have since added the metal track which is only a few kilo. Support and guide wheels are a waste of time. I suggest the pale finger as it won't fit down the side of the house but you can back up a vehicle to the rear fence and lift it over. The wall was built in place and is held to the concrete with 6 x 12mm concrete self tappers so it "SHOULD" simply unscrew and lift but with the stratco steel cladding it will be heavy. It does have plywood bracing so "SHOULD" be strong enough to survive transport, but building another wall is also an option. I used normal old flashing from bunnings to seal the gap between dome and wall, easily replaced.

Here's some pics. The track runs on 3 grooved wheels, the sprung motor drives the belt, hence the dome. The control box is USB and has a relay board for switching. Ascom controlled via lesve dome driver. Positional sensors are attached to the drive cog.

The slot opens on a pull string. I was going to replace the door with a light weight aluminium one and motorise it via a capstan, then you could program it to shut down and close up while your in bed like normal people

Never had to use a dew strap inside this. And the build pages are here -> http://starshed.net/obs/index.htm

Thanks for this Robin, but I'll have to pass. I am moving to a unit at Runaway Bay and I cant get a Palfinger truck close enough to the second floor roof-top patio due to the gardens below.
I really need something that can be assembled from smaller pieces.
