From what I've seen, anything entering the atmosphere and burning up, produces an erratic trailing plume, typically branching as the object fractures under the stresses.
A large bolide that bounces off the atmosphere CAN produce a somewhat aircraft-like trail, but would be faster moving than any high-altitude plane. I've seen video of a whopper doing just that over Alaska in the '90's and it was a spectacular sight.
But why not an aircraft contrail, Stephen - surely that's the most likely source? They seem to be prevalent in the current WA weather conditions, too.
Didn't see it, was locked up at work.
Never seen a contrail over Perth during the day, not that it's impossible, just that planes rarely fly high enough in this part of the world.
Ususally when we see them here, they are either heading in to land or have just taken off....
Only ever spotted one at altitude over Perth in my 30 odd years, and that was a full moon night so could just make out a slight trail. Figured it must have been heading to South Africa from Syd or Melb.
Jet contrails over Melbourne are rare aswell, but I have seen contrails from aircraft fying to/from Perth and Adelaide to NZ and from Avalon to Sydney.

Did anyone see something in the sky above Perth at around 2.30pm today, Saturday 2nd May, heading from overhead to the west ?
It could've been a Sydney to South Africa flight, but if the flight were to be following the "great circle", then that would take it some 1500km south of Perth.
Contrails over Perth are certainly possible. There was a beauty a few years ago when a plane on the way to Asia from Melbourne had to divert over Perth because of weather and we got a fantastic view of the result! Looking at the date on the photo its the 4th of December! Despite our warm climate we can actually see a range of atmospheric effects caused by ice crystals high up. You just need to aware and looking up at the right time.
While we're showing pics of contrails
I spotted this one over Taormina in Sicily, Italy.
Wierdest contrail I've ever seen.
Unfortunatelly, in my haste to get photo's, I somehow bumped the camera into 640x480 mode, so these are presented at 100%
Strange how these things happen..... cue the Twilight Zone theme.
My dad rang me at work today around 2pm, told me to step out of the shop and look north-west about 45deg up from the horizon....
I did so and lo and behold, there was a great contrail!
Not long like the pics above, but sure was fat.
Contrails over Perth are a result of Armed Forces carryout out training over Perth. Heaps of military aircraft flying including flying in the jetstream.
I have seen that (I think its a plane) about 20 times. It looks like it has 6 engines where the smoke is coming from. it moves quicker than any plane I have seen and it goes vertical so far up so you can't see it anymore. I want to know what it is.

I work close to Pearce Airbase and saw either a c130 Herc or p3 orion (last week I think) and it had smoke billowing out the back of it. The trail lasted a fair bit too.
I tried asking some of the aircrew( who were staying at the hotel I work at) which plane it was but they were a bit hesitant in telling me anything!
I have seen it a couple of times too... it is VERY black, but it's not some super-secret prototype or anything.. it's something large, like a C-130 or something as has already been mentioned, tho way too high to tell.

Yeah it look like of those
Though when I saw it, it was very low
And it had ablue logo on the tail (NASA??)
It was around the time they were around in the outback testing and it was at 4pm during the middle of 2008

I just saw three erratic trailing plumes over Perth, Friday, 7 June 2013, between 3 and 5 pm. I can even see the the object moving across the sky in very slow motion, obviously it must have been going fast but it looked like a slow moving object...can anyone share some info on this, perhaps a website where these objects get recorded?
