As soon as I open my browser in Linux flashing adds appears
What is one to do in order to prevent such un-wanted adds?
More and more adds from different companies
They are driving me crazy

If you use Firefox or Chrome, install AdBlock Plus - it's an add on.plug in for the browser, and it stops 99.9% of banners, advertising, pop ups, pop unders etc.

It is free.

I don't run any ad block and I don't see any ads like this. It may be more that you have picked up some adware somewhere.
Best run a couple of anti virus scans and maybe an adware scan to see if it picks anything up.

Ah yeah, but then again do you even need SPybot or AVG under Linux...

I believe there IS something for Wine, but I am out of touch/date with all that

Checked on Spybot saw nothing for Linux.
AVG or Avast same thing.
Used AVAST for many years, never had a problem

In the bottom right-hand corner of the browser page in OP's screenshot, in a grey font, it says, "(c) 2013 Conduit". Is this the same Conduit (publisher network and platform) that is notorious for its browser hijacker software?

From Wikipedia: Conduit distributes what is considered as a browser hijacker. The user customized browser toolbars force change the browser homepage and default search engine and revert to them when the user tries to restore them. Using the browser extension system, they sometimes disguise themselves to make it harder for the user to remove them.

Alongside the copyright notice in the browser page, it says "FLV Player" - is that how the adverts are being served to OP's PC?

I'm amazed this problem is happening under Linux - Windows and Internet Explorer are the uisual vehicle for such plagues.

why are you amazed? browser extensions tend to be cross platform anyway.

check what your homepage is set to in firefox and what browser extensions are installed, either of those are likely to be the culprit.

Create a new firefox profile and then start it up to see if the ad goes away. If it does, then it's in your local profile, if it does not, then it's in the $PATH.

I assume you are logged in as a group "user" and not "root" ... if you are running under root, then I'd suggest you stop...

How to avoid ads? Don't open a search page that's supported by ads.

What search page is that, anyway? I seem to recall reading about Ubuntu collecting search terms (even internal searches) and teaming up with third parties. You won't find me using Ubuntu.
