I recall when the very first CCD sensors were being produced that any
talk of digital imaging replacing photographic film at your local photo club was generally met with pitchforks and flaming torches.
"They'll never be the same size as film" was a constant refrain.
Sony have recently released the IMX811. A 4" 245Mp sensor no less.
(19200 x 12800 pixels).

As to whether we'll see one in an astocam package remains to be seen..
But by any measure a 4" sensor is seriously impressive imaging real estate.
