Last night I managed to capture a few images of Nova V572 Vel just before the clouds rolled in. I used my small Askar SQA55 55mm scope + monochrome camera with a V photometric filter. Using ASTAP I measured the nova to be magnitude 4.87(V) by comparing it to the nearby mag 4.90 star HR 4134.

Here’s a link to the image with a few more details and showing Nova V572 Vel (centre) and HR 4134 (left): https://bsky.app/profile/skymaps.com/post/3lsp7jobarv2z

Cheers, Kym

Did a remote observatory image of it this morning and aperture photometry.
Mag 5.08 (Bessel V filter).

Will try and image it tonight from home

DSLR shot of the Nova in Vela (V0572 Vel) taken from my home in Carlingford. Not naked eye from suburbia.

Tonight, I estimated it to be at visual magnitude 5.8 at 18:56 AEST (08:56 UTC), Monday 30 June. It seemed to be between magnitude 5.8 and 5.9 reference stars, using 10x50 Nikon Aculon A211 binoculars from suburban Melbourne, Bortle 5. There was a waxing crescent moon and slight cloud.

Just came in from nabbing V572 Nova Velorum with my trusty 10x50mm binoculars. I estimate it to be around magnitude 6.0.

Then swung over to Lupus to check out V462 Nova Lupi which has faded slightly. Ain't we lucky Aussies to be able to observe two novae in prime time simultaneously
