Australia's first major astro imaging conference, the FLI AAIC 2011, is on! The brain-child of Mark Bolton (Bolts_Tweed), a lecturer at Griffith University, the AAIC2011 is the first conference of its kind in Australia, specifically targeted at Astrophotographers but welcome to all Astronomy enthusiasts. The conference is on from the 8th - 10th July 2011, and is being held at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Surfers Paradise, Queensland. The programme features 3 days of workshops, demonstrations and lectures by some of Australia's most prominent professional and amateur astrophotographers, as well as two renowned international guest speakers - Ken Crawford and Rogelio Bernal Andreo. The keynote speaker is Professor David Malin - one of the pioneers in the art and science of astronomy imaging. Local speakers include the BOSS Supernova Group, Mark Bolton, Greg Bradley, Terry Cuttle, Marcus Davies, Jason Jennings, Max Kilmister, Humayun Qureshi, Mike Sidonio, Brett Soames, Eddie Trimarchi, Anthony Wesley and Julian West. As you can see, a real who's who of Australian Astro-Imaging talent and experts in their respective fields. The full programme and synopsis of each of the guest speakers is available on the AAIC2011 website. Registration is now open, and is limited to 150 attendees - so be quick and register early to receive the early-bird discount. Registration is $120 per head before 4th May, or $150 per head after the 4th May - a very reasonable cost given the quality of guest speakers, and cheaper than equivalent conferences around the world. Additional options include the Conference Dinner ($80 per head) as well as accommodation at the Crowne Plaza ($180-$200). There are other local accommodation areas around the Crowne Plaza, and can be arranged at your own discretion. Airfares to Surfers Paradise are obviously not included. An event like this is a huge undertaking - Mark is to be commended on his passion and dedication to getting it up and running. It's a real inspiration. To keep the costs down, Mark has done an excellent job securing sponsors, including Fingers Lakes Instruments (FLI), the Major Platinum Sponsor. Please support this event by registering for the conference as soon as possible. To have the quality and calibre of guest speakers together for a weekend, talking about and sharing their astrophotography techniques and secrets, is something not to miss.
