This is a mate of mine's handiwork! (He'd love me for saying that!).

We had our rescue trucks on display at the local show when we got the call to a truck prang not far from town. A loaded chip truck had rolled on a not too sharp corner and come to rest against a tree.

On arrival at the scene the driver was trapped by one leg between the tree and the roof of the cab. The bonnet was also folded back between his leg and the roof of the cab. I started work on spreading the roof/bonnet away from the tree to release his leg while the ambos worked on the driver.

We'd been there several minutes when I recognised the driver's voice, as a close mate of mine (and he was also a rescue operator). I was having some difficulty getting grip with the spreaders on the fibreglass of the roof and bonnet so I had to resort to some brute force to keep them in place while another rescuer got some packing to stop it all from collapsing on his leg again. It was quite frustrating trying to communicate the urgency to get some packing without also worrying the driver who understood everything we were doing and our prowords!

Later we found out he's had to swerve off the road to avoid an oncoming small truck on the wrong side of the road. When the truck fell over, he was thrown through the windscreen and was rolling along the side of the road beside the bonnet of the truck. He was quite unrecognisable to look at! The other truck didn't stop.

The next photo will have your pet in it.

The Battle of Hue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Hu%E1%BA%BF) began with the Tet Offensive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tet_Offensive) on January 31st 1968 when
North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong (VC) soldiers swept into the city.
A major target was the 1st ARVN Division (South Vietnamese Army) stationed
within the fortress walls of the Imperial Citadel, the Vietnamese equivalent
of Beijing's Forbidden City.

North Vietnamese forces managed to infiltrate the Citadel (http://www.alphareconassociation.org/huecitadel.jpg) and one of the
bloodiest battles of the war ensued.

In the counter-attack, US Marines entered the fray and A-4 Skyhawks
dropped bombs and napalm on the Citadel and Imperial Palace.

The Battle of Hue resulted in the estimated death of over 8780 combatants
and 844 civilians.

The bullet ridden and burnt out building in the attached image sits atop
the north-west inner wall over looking the moat and bears testimony to the
intensity of the conflict.

07-02-2011, 12:26 PM
We had hired a driver for the day to take us to the remote jungle
temple of Beng Mealea. Though only 63km from Angkor, the trip takes
several hours. This particular site had been a Khmer Rouge stronghold as
recently as 1996 and sees comparatively few visitors compared to Angkor.

When we arrived, I purchased a couple of entry tickets from a woman wearing
the drab official uniform of the Ministry responsible for administering the country's
ancient sites. As she passed the tickets to me, I noted she had lovely manicured hands
and as I glanced up I could see under the peaked military-like cap a beautiful
face. She didn't smile and I thought she looked a little sad. I guess she may have
been about 19 years old.

She told us in English that because some climbing was involved, a guide
was necessary and was included in the ticket price. She led us down the path
to the spectacular ruins and we attentively listened to her as she pointed out
various points of interest. Eventually, we reached some steps we would need to climb
and she introduced us to another guide who would take us from there. She had such
a lovely face to look at, if not a little melancholic, I felt a little disappointed to
have to part with her company.

An hour or so later, having scrambled over the ruins, we came to the front of
the temple complex again and our original guide was there to meet us.
This time I was happy to see she wore a smile. As is the custom, I handed
her a gratuity, stepped back, clasped my hands together, gave a bow and thanked her.

When I bowed down, I caught a glimpse of the gap between her black polished
shoes and the cuff of her uniform trousers and I could see for the first time that
she had a pair of artificial legs.

The problem with landmines is that they are a barbaric, indiscriminate weapon,
that injure and kill the innocent and often young, long after the conflict is
over.

I don't think I will ever forget that young women.

This theme has sat for a while while we all thought about it. Turns out, for me solution was in the wood heater on my sun-deck. I thought it would be too acidic an environment, but some plants usually considered weeds seem to like it. I should leave it and see what, if any, the second generation of plants will be.

Irma my 90 year old grandmother a month or so before her death. we gave her a framed shot of her and my grandfather for her birthday. That shot was taken the day before they married.they were in Martin place Sydney, it was in the early 1930,s before the war and was one of those 3 penny shots, the photographer snapped the shot and then gave you a receipt and you could collect the print four hours later in the arcade around the corner. As the original was only matchbox size she had not seen it with her poor eyesight for many many years, the digital enlargement helped with that. i have included that shot as well, just for interest...........next shot should contain a baby

Loads of (rusty) iron :D in the remains of the SS Maheno, once an ocean liner belonging to the Union Company of New Zealand that operated in the Tasman Sea, crossing between New Zealand and Australia, from 1905 until 1935. She was also used as a hospital ship by the New Zealand Naval Forces during World War I.

On 3 July 1935 the Maheno left Sydney under tow by the 1,758 ton ship Oonah, a former Tasmanian Steamers Pty. Ltd. Bass Strait ferry, built in 1888, which along with the Maheno had been sold to an Osaka shipbreaker. The ships were linked by a 900-foot (270 m) 6.75-inch (17.1 cm) wire rope.

On the afternoon of 7 July, while about 50 miles from the coast, the towline parted during a severe cyclone. Attempts to reattach the towline failed in the heavy seas, and the Maheno, with eight men aboard, drifted off and disappeared. The Oonah, with her steering gear temporarily disabled, broadcast a radio message requesting assistance for the Maheno, whose propellers had been removed.

The ship was finally found on 10 July by an aircraft piloted by Keith Virtue, beached off the Coast of Fraser Island. The crew of the Maheno set up camp onshore, waiting for the Oonah to arrive, which it eventually did on 12 July. The ship was subsequently stripped of her fittings, but attempts to refloat her failed, and eventually the wreck was offered for sale, but found no buyers.

Photo taken in July, from a light aircraft (a beach flight) when exploring Fraser island with friends visiting from Europe.

The next photo should have something common, but as seen from an unusual view point….

One of me taken at a hazard reduction last season.

Certainly was a warm event, hope it makes everyone feel warmer.

The next photo should be "Full of cuteness" :D

Taken on my morning walk today along the rocks at The Bluff, Devonport.
The orange lichen is a year round feature, but loves the damp weather, and thrives in it.
The next photo should be made of Old Wood

Here's a foggy morning somewhere in NZ.
The theme for the next image is High and Mighty.

I hope that I'm not jumping in out of sequence here... Something seasonal, like Autumn...

After the rain.

The next photo should have something to drink in it (not necessarily alcoholic!)

The next photo should have something to do with mystery

Lovely picture of the lime and water. It looks very appealing indeed. :)

I hope this looks sufficiently mysterious. It was the view down the valley from our veranda this evening. Smokey haze from local hazard reduction burns added to the feel of twilight. I was hoping to catch a hint of the far horizon behind the grey, but I was a tad too late...

A nice easy one next to try and lure some more posters in - Young.

Come on - kids, pets, plants... whatever... :)

Photo Challenge

Hey Suzy, welcome to the forum.
Just a small point on thread rules:
You have to post a picture to nominate the next Topic. :D
The current topic is "Young"
Just post a pic of yourself!
Then you can nominate "Spooky"

But I agree, Chris' picture is absolutely stunning.

Ah, I get it now! :thanx:
I was quite confused on how this thread worked with the monthly challenge. I thought you guys put out suggestions here for the monthly challenge titles. I have a few questions about the monthly photo challenge but I'll finish up here first (see if I can find a "young" pic I've taken of something!) and then go there. Thanks for all your help, much appreciated :).

The Boeing 787-9 is a young aircraft with Etihad Airways taking delivery of Reg# A6-BLA (pictured here) on December 2014.
This is flight EYG484 from Abu Dhabi to Brisbane captured from my home on November 2016.
I'm laughing that I managed to find a way to incorporate aviation into the "young" category

Okay, so there's my pic. I now get to choose the next title, yes?
The next photo will have - "spooky".

Does this mean that I can't post in "spooky" because I came up with title. I'm guessing so, yes?
Let's see if I have this right... when the first person that posts a pic automatically gets to choose the next title?
EDIT: I have found the rules in the first post so I'm much clearer now.

Spooky...

Well, a bit spooky! :) I tried a variety of ideas but this was judged by my wife to be the nearest to the title. It's inside my shed a couple of nights ago. Handheld and looking towards the door. The red light is used to help preserve my night vision when I go in and out to get different telescope eyepieces, etc. The sheets cover a motorbike and a couple of telescopes. But what's lurking in the blackness beyond that door?.... the creatures of the night ..... (OK mostly bandicoots and kangaroos... ;) )

Next photo of Tail or Tails please.

Tails

Oooh that's a nice easy one!
This is one of my favourite shots I took at Brisbane Airport, I call it Red Tails in the Sunset :).

The next photo should have something with to do with water droplets.

"Red Tails in the Sunset" . Great title. :) Nice one Suzy.

Bonus points for having kangaroo tails on the red tails too...

This is a daisy flower in our garden. It was about the size of the end of my thumb and the little spider was so small (about the size of a grain of rice) that I didn't actually see it until I downloaded the pictures onto my computer. And then I whipped back and took a couple more. It looked nice and dry under there too!

Next picture should feature a musical instrument please.
