Heres a few recent snaps ... well last few years ... not much point showing what I used to look like ... so this is my 50 and after look

We mostly do stuff together so its rare to find a picture of just me .. so my best friend and partner helps make these visually appealing.

So if you see me wandering the street, stop me and we can go for a beer :P

Hi JJJ & All,

Yep, I know I'm always two weeks behind the times but I'd like to join in the Chris, Chris & Jen chorus here. In fact the new hair makes you look a lot like Kobe Steele. (And I can now hear a lot of people saying "Who in the hell is Kobe Steele??)

Those who are a few years either side of 50 will remember Kobe as the 18-yo female host of Channel 10 (Sydney's) afternoon pop-music show "Right-on" in the late 70's.

I was in love with her ... for almost a week but she married the bass-player in AC-DC instead. Ahhhhhh ... memories.

For those who remember, here is a pic to compare with Nettie's ...

Best,

Les D

Time for a update, taken in iron ore country in the Hamersley ranges. This is one of my favorite spots for some stargazing, epic vantage point that gives a bird eyes view of the ranges, mine sites and rail lines.....watching the ore trains snake through the ranges is a sight :)

Makes me feel homesick looking at that picture. I spent much of my youth and about 10 years as an adult living and working around the pilbra (karratha, Tomprice, Newman, Pana-bloody-wonica, Roebourne, Port headland etc). The deep blue sky melting into the red earth sure is a sight for sore eyes.

Here's one taken today which we're using on the Macarthur Astronomical Society website to promote our up-coming "m a g n i t u d e" event at the Campbelltown Art Centre October 4th-9th. Speakers on the final Saturday will be David Reneke and David Malin. Images on the wall are from fellow MAS member, Humayun Qureshi "Octane", and will be shown amongst nearly sixty others as well as 45 original Voyager 2 photographs from the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in California.

BTW I'm always struck by how much scenery in Sth Africa can look like Oz. Even the grass is the same shade of 'green'.

My 40th birthday, long awaited trip down the Great Ocean Road....with my wife, who has always wanted to see the 12 apostles.

Day 1, Werribee Mansion.... tour, lunch, all good, bit of rain, OK.
Night 1, lunch steak irritated broken molar, spent 4-5 hours wandering the mansion with heat pack smooshed against my face, sucking hot coffee and ice cold water to try and ease the pain. Total sleep 1/2 hour.

Day 2, Made it as far as Geelong, head in hands in agony, wife pulls off the freeway, finds dentist on offramp (lucky), plead with Dentist to rip out tooth. Dentist declines as he is too busy. Tears in eyes help change his mind. Rip out tooth with pliers....mmmm, painful.... relief comes with corresponding VERY strong drugs....Spent 6 more hours taking photos and dragging along behind EVERY caravan and RV in Australia to get to Port Campbell in time for sunset. JUST make it, walk in teeming rain to viewing platform (just like Shelley's shot) but temp in April is 5 degrees and wind is 80km/h. Took a handful of sunset shots. CRAP.
Night 2, Flight centre has booked Port FAIRY not Port Campbell for Motel. Have to drive 1.5 hours in pouring rain dodging road trains on our side of the road, aquaplaning over sheet water and almost killing 3 dogs running down our side of the road at 100km/h. Motel is crap, restaurant is closed for private function, dinner at fish and chip shop, closes while we are eating...kicked out, go back sleep in stinky room.

Day 3, drive back to 12 Apostles, take photos, visit other sites, not bad....drive to Ballaarat, tour Sovereign Hill, eat crap food, find gold specks in tourist creek = impress wife, nice hotel in SH, Ghost Tour for dinner and walk through freezing town for 2 hours, see NO GHOSTS in most HAUNTED city in AUS, disappointed.

Day 4, Decide to look for more gold in tourist creek in SH, change mind to drive to Dunnolly to search for REAL gold, follow GPS through stupid country roads, head through Clunes, drive along road into town and.......GET T-BONED at a cross street which has no Give WAY sign visible. Rental Car is a right off, wife is in EXTREME PAIN (she was driving and car hit us on her side), she is trapped in car for an hour while fireys rip door off. Ambulance to Ballaarat hospital, 30mg morphine, XRAY, CT, no idea why she has such severe chest pain. Discharged at 4pm, we need to catch 530pm flight home, in Ballaarat, no car, its toast....

Cab to train station via chemist for pain killers for wife, choice, train to somewhere NEAR airport or bus TO airport, go for bus, $140...!!!
Missed our 530 flight. Get to airport at 745pm. Hand GPS to rental car company (no car, no keys). Get charged $4500 excess and other bull**** charges. Wife's pain killers wearing off....

815pm, head into terminal, Virgin flights full, Qantas full (Anzac Day Monday holiday) head to Jetstar...YES, they have 2 seats left to Sydney.... Wife says " OH thank god, I had a car accident today and have just been released from hospital...." Jetstar wench says: " Do you have a certificate to FLY????" Oh CRAP!. Look in envelope from hospital, only doctors referral, no CTF! Go to ring Hospital, Blackberry dead. Wife phone has not much credit, Jetstar hasnt got a working fax, flight boards in 15 mins, no ticket, no CTF, head back to Qantas desk for fax number, gay attendant says speak to the hand, I am on the phone....I almost rip his head off and get fax number, ring hospital, told Dr has gone home, cant help, I threaten to take a taxi to hospital and ram something down their throat, demand to speak to registrar, fax arrives 30 sec later. RUN back to Jetstar desk 400m away, wife has booked tickets, bags on plane, fax in hand 5 mins before flight is wheels up. RUN to plane, wife is in AGONY. Make flight, pressure kills her chest, plane almost returns to Melbourne as attendants concerned she will die....I talk them out of it. Get to Sydney, get car from long term, drive home, arrive at 1am.

Jet Star flights cost $700, Car excess $4500, train/cab $200, holiday for 4 days $2000. Total $7,400.....AND, my wife has a fractured sternum, takes her 7 months to recover, after she develops whooping cough from work 2 weeks later.

So, in a nutshell that takes 2 pages to describe in brief, we will NEVER be going to Victoria EVER again......only consolation is we took travel insurance, which covered the car and the extra expenses, refunded after 2 months of buggerising around.....

Sorry you asked now H?

Cheers

Chris

Epic post is epic.

It's almost as if the Universe conspired against you two!

Sorry to hear of all the bad that happened.

Something's just happened here -- I got awoken by a guy running and yelling on the street he was going to kill someone. Not two minutes later, the street is full of police cars. And, I can hear constant sobbing. It sounds like the guy carried through with his intention... eek.

Your trip sounds like a script for a National Lampoons movie. Thank goodness for holiday insurance. Smart move.

H, when are you going to post your photo? :D

Thanks JJJ, right back at ya....;)

Yes, the only thing missing was Christie Brinkley dancing around her red Ferrari while I was eating dog pee stained sandwiches.....maybe next year? I forgot, the wife also got a ticket (3 points and $240 fine) for failing to give way....winner...

Come on H, don't keep the ladies in suspenders, wait.... that sounds good!

Hi Ken,

Should have explained that, it's not Victoria's fault, just that bad things seem to happen to me and my family there, that's all....as you can appreciate from the story. Could have happened anywhere, but it seems that whenever I go south, things just seem to go south.....

Nothing more meant by the comment other than circumstance.

Thanks Baz,

Yeah, considering he was customer service, no-one was at his desk and I was there with a Jetstar employee who was asking for me and Qantas and Jetstar are effectively the same company....AND he was chatting to a friend and not actually doing any work, I thought it a bit much that we were kept waiting for 3 minutes while he waffled....

Makes me feel lucky our trip only required one ambulance call :P oh, and a very minor car accident...maybe it is something about Viccy  :P

1. At my sister's 50th. We were supposed to come as someone (Patsy from Ab Fab was there). I was trying to effect a Blues Brothers look. Yes I'll keep the day job.

2. With the Birthday Girl, who seems to be denying the family connection.

3. With an old friend. He was so much more fun before the hip replacements.

4. A couple of weeks ago at Kinchega National Park (Menindee Lakes)

We tried his and her scopes. Mostly it was found to be too much work for him. And now we have the 16" there isn't room in the car for two scopes. Between turns at the eyepiece we talk to the other observers, look through binos and Yasmin writes up her observing notes.

I'm the one on the left with my brother here at ATNF (Radio telescope at Narrabri) back in 1993.
It was a good night! I was only 18 at the time and worked a night shift at Pizza Hut in Sydney before driving up and arriving in the early hours of the morning. Found my brother at work (he worked at the telescope) and then lay on his landcruiser's bonnet watching the very dark sky (once we turned the lights off!) until nearly dawn.

Hi All,

Last night was the 50th anniversary celebration dinner for the Sutherland Astronomical Society and we were treated to a great slide-show of our people and activities over that time.

Here's a photo of me taken by Peter Williams at the Sutherland Astronomical Society's Bombala total solar eclipse expedition, on the morning of the eclipse 23rd October 1976. I'm at right in the white tee and faded maroon cord-jeans aged 14 years and 2 months and lusting after that telescope. Later that year I started grinding an 8" f/6. The others in the photo are former society president Greg Hayward (at the eyepiece of his 8" f/7 newtonian) and Lance Raynor.

We were heavily clouded out in the afternoon and did not see the eclipse.
Great memories!

Best,

Here's a "Where's Wally?" photo in my new home-made yowie suit.

And a little fellow I was helping out down the coast last year. Picked a whole heap of ticks out from under his scales and in his ears. No doubt it hurt, but I'm sure he was grateful.

Hi folks I've been a member of ice in space for a while now but I only read the posts. This is the first time I,ve written anything in it. However this time I want to picked the brains of the most experienced astronomers out there. I'm looking to purchase some acreage to set up an observatory for some astrophotography work. What I'd like to know is where I should by in Victoria that would have the most number of clear nights in a year. And if possible different areas in decending order of clear nights.

Hi David,

Just letting you know why you haven't recieved any answers to your question about where to buy land.

You put your post in the wrong section. This section you posted it in is for photos of members and isn't read very often.
You need to start a thread in the 'General Chat' section HERE (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=4)

In 'General Chat' just click on 'New Thread' near the top and title your thread as a question: Ideal dark site in Victoria?
That way you will get replies

Cheers
Ken

P.S. I have also sent this info to you in a Private Message. :)
