My light box arrived today, convinced Peter has shares in a bubble wrap company as it was so well protected for transport.
Works a treat, made for my FLT132, fits beautifully, nice and lightweight so can't do any harm to the dewshield.
Mine came fitted with a variable dial ; given I have a qhy9 and it has a shutter, it needs a couple of second exposures for even illumination, no problems whatsoever, easily did whatever exposure I needed.
Certainly a well made and thought out product.

Just for information I reckon that I have made well over 300 of these now for all types of scopes/cameras. One thing I have noticed recently is when I respond to someone with a quote/information, that is the last thing I hear from the person. It is only the minority do this, but I think it is quite poor form to not acknowledge someone if they have gone to the trouble to respond to a query, be it a cost query or whatever regarding the light boxes. I used to chase them up, but do not bother any more as it fills the mail box up too quickly.
So people please if I send a response, please acknowledge one way or another so I at least know that you have received it.:thanx:

Here's a funny one, Erik got his light box Friday and apparently his young child decided to stand on the carton. He nearly cacked himself as the carton was dented, but the light box inside, was in tact. I do put a lot of bubble wrap in the packing, in this case it saved the day I reckon.;)

I have just found another use for your light box! Preliminary testing done already, going to be my artificial star generator! I just taped a blank piece of paper of the front and carefully stabbed some holes in it using a pen. It sort of worked, holes were too big to be able to use focusing mask but FWHM reading suggest that the length of my house is JUST long enough (within 1m).
So this week I plan to calculate the filter offsets while Melbourne is having windy, cloudy and rainy evenings :)
Exfso
26-11-2015, 12:04 AM
They say necessity is the mother of invention, I never thought of this one, but I see no reason if the holes are tiny enough why it would not work. Might I suggest that you use matt black paper, relatively heavier density than normal paper. that way you could do it at night as well without all the extra light bleeding out. I cant remember if I added a dimmer to your light box, but that could also be of assistance as well.

Hi Peter, I'm interested in one of these for my Skywatcher ED80 (gold Pro series). I'm sure you already have the dimensions, but just in case, the dew shield outer diameter looks like it's 116mm. How much would that set me back including postage to Canberra?
Exfso
25-12-2015, 04:38 PM
Hi mate, don't know your name, but that is ok. Need to know if you want a dimmer. Pretty sure the outside diameter of the Dew Shield is around 117mm, would need confirmation as they may be a little different to the ED 80 which I have made numerous light boxes for.
Best if you reply via my email address: exfso2@adam.com.au

I am finding an increased tendency for people who request information on the light boxes just to disappear into the void after I go to the effort to respond to their requests. Common courtesy dictates, at least in my eyes, that it proper to acknowledge a response and not just ignore it. I know that this is basically a minority, but still I like to know that people have at least received my replies, whether they intend getting a light box or not.
So come on people at least let me know you have received my replies.:thanx:

Thanks Malcolm. Not you mate, it is people who want information etc and I go to the trouble to give them what they need and I never hear from them again, not even to say they have received the information. I guess some people just do not have much in the way of common courtesy.
Enough of my little rant, as I said the vast majority do at least respond one way or the other which is all I ask.

In my attempts to improve these, I have come across an external plug in type dimmer that works a treat. So now when I do a box with dimmer, it will not be hard wired, but instead the plug in dimmer will be used. This will give the individual the choice of either dimming or straight in power. I tested it on my non dimmed TOA130 light box and the dimming appeared to be very linear.

It looks like I might be having an operation on my right hand in the very near future, possibly as early as this week. The finger that was broken earlier on in the year has not healed and is more bent than I am :D Also I have acute arthritis at the base of both thumbs, and there is a procedure that removes the offending bone that is apparently very successful, so I am going to discuss that as well, and if okay will get the right hand properly worked over in the one hit. Obviously this will adversely effect the ability to build light boxes for a while as I would have the finger in a splint and the thumb in a brace for a few months.
Exfso
05-12-2016, 01:26 AM
Just for information, I am booked in for this procedure on 11 January. Apparently the wrist and hand are in a cast for at least 6 weeks, then a brace followed by remedial physio, can take up to 12 months to get full use again, bloody hell that is nice to know....

hi Pete
it will be well worth it I wish I got my knee done ages ago and as for the pain its not all that bad the trick is listen to the doctor and don't over do it if it is hurting even just a little stop and rest it up .
I have only had my OP a week ago and I am moving around ok and it is getting better by the day I still have a long way to go but you will be fine my friend before you know it you be looking back on it and saying the same and back into making your fantastic Light boxes .

09-01-2017, 09:59 PM
Just for information some tech information on the LEDs I use in these light boxes. They are rated at 15,000MCD and 20mA and 3.1vdc. To get full rated current I use a 470 ohm voltage dropping resistor for a 12vdc input. Having said that I have tested them on a LED tester that I have at a rated current of 50mA. They really glowed extremely bright, but did not blow. However I stick to the rated current for longevity. I believe that they would not last very long at the higher current.
As I have my right hand operated on Wednesday, the construction of these will be on hold for at least 2 months and possibly more depending on how I heal. If the op is successful, I will get my left hand done later on.

I had a guy email me for a light box today, really I cannot even hold a pencil at present, it is extremely painful to try anything with the right hand. It is still in a splint and that has at least another 2 weeks to run and then I start exercises. As I told the guy today, at the very earliest it would be 2 months from now before I would even entertain trying. The left thumb is just as bloody sore as it is doing everything and it needs the same op when the right is usable. Not in a great hurry to have another operation, that is for sure.:(

Thanks Pete, I appreciate your thoughts. Probably the last 20 or so I have built have really been a challenge as my thumbs are really stuffed. Decided I had to fix the problem, so one at a time, the repair begins. Look forward to getting into full swing. The first one is the worst as I also had the knackered broken finger same hand fixed and the end joint frozen, I suppose I am a masochist to get 2 done at once, as they say in for a penny, in for a pound..:eyepop:

Just an update, the hand is slowly improving and with any luck I should be able to hopefully start lightboxes again on a limited scale in around 4 weeks, assuming Murphy does not get in on the act. At least until I get the other thumb done then it will be back to square one.
I did a pinch test at the hand therapist this week, the left thumb and forefinger got 9kg and the right one was 3kg, long way to go, but 6 weeks ago it was an effort to touch the two together.

Another update, pretty well ready to try a light box. Thumb is sometimes a little touchy, and no where near full strength, but I can do most things now as long as I do not try to use too much force, then it lets me know to back off or suffer the pain. As I said previous, the left one is actually more painful than the operated one, so that is all positive, but indicates obviously that the left one needs the op as well. This will not be happening until next year, I need to get the right one fully operational first.:D
Exfso
27-05-2017, 12:29 AM
As I said previously it is all improving slowly actually managed to do up a fairly large "nut" on the underside of a leaking cistern today without too much grief, so the strength is coming back. I reckon the right thumb is at about 70% and in my opinion that is excellent considering it was at about 10% before the op...

I am about 75% through my first light box since the operation, all going well as long as I am careful. The right thumb is pretty well normal now which is all good, as I said before, it is lacking in strength, but hopefully that will return. One thing is for sure it is a far cry from what it was like. Once I am 100% happy with it, I will get the left one done and the process starts again. Bloody hell, getting old is the pits...
Exfso
04-07-2017, 06:48 PM
I have now completed 2 light boxes since the op and no issues. Started the third today. When I say no issues, I mean with the right hand, the left is another story and that is next to be fixed...

Looks like I am going to have my left thumb operated on in the next couple of months, so like the previous op, I will be out of operation for building these for around 3 months after the procedure, at present it is penned in for mid January, but might try to put it back to the end of Feb. I am currently doing my last light box before my op, so those that have contacted me and don't have the decency to respond to my replies, will obviously miss out. As it takes around a week to build one of these, and my op is next Wednesday, no more will be built until I am fit enough to start again, probably in the order of mid June, going on my previous recuperation period, and that is assuming all goes well and Murphy does not get his finger in the pie..

Had the op on Wednesday as planned, much more painful than the first for some reason, maybe it was in worse condition than other thumb. Already had half a pack of Panadiene Forte, hardly takes the edge off. Looks like I have a boxing glove for a hand at present, such is the swelling, not a pretty sight, still the previous procedure swelled up as well and that has turned out fine.:prey:

One month into rehab, man is it still damn sore when I do the exercises. It is healing well, but long way to go internally. Surgeon said it was much worse than the right hand and he had to do a lot more work on the thumb bone. I am still wearing the splint that was constructed for me and that in itself is a nuisance. So light boxes will be a while yet.

Just bumping this up. I detect a distinct lack of interest in these now, maybe I might well stop making them, as really I make very little out of these when you factor in time and material cost, maybe we have reached saturation point.
I have calculated that I have constructed well over 300 since I first started over 12 years ago, now from memory.
In addition to the above, I have noticed in recent times when I respond to a request, it is quite common now for people to just disappear and not even acknowledge my correspondence, which I find rather frustrating and to be honest quite rude.

I have just received one of these light boxes from Peter and thought I'd leave a review.
Peter was great to deal with, responded promptly to emails and after handing over the dimensions of my scope Peter was able to give me a quote for the light box. Having currently used the old 'white t-shirt' method I was looking forward to a quick, easy and effective solution to taking flats, as such I went ahead with the order.
Peter was quick to build the light box and kept me updated with regards to the construction and mailing of the box, providing an Auspost tracking number so I could keep an eye on where it was. After having the package delivered I've got to say that I'm very impressed with everything, Peter has certainly delivered! The lightbox was very well packaged, with lots of padding to ensure it didn't get damaged on the way.
The lightbox itself is very lightweight (you certainly don't want something too heavy hanging off the end of your scope), but sturdy enough for it's purpose. It appears to be very well made, with clean edges and an overall nice design. I asked peter for a 12v cigarette plug as this is what I currently use to power my mount, along with a dimmer so I can adjust the light panel. I fired it up and I'm impressed with how even the light is across the surface, definitely what you need for taking those flats. The box fits over the end of my scope like a glove, with about a 1-2mm gap so it's not too tight. The dimmer works as you'd expect, allowing me to adjust the brightness of the light panel.
Overall I'd have to say buying one of these from Peter was a great experience, I'm very happy with the final product and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a lightbox!
Cheers Peter!

This new adhesive I am using cuts build time by around 70% it is brilliant, cures by putting UV light on it. I reckon I have built pretty close to 400 light boxes since I started around 12 years ago, I think only 1 has been returned faulty and that was because the owner left it turned on for a very long time and I am assuming it was around a couple of weeks at least. It dimmed the Leds and I replaced and sent it back to him just for freight, so these just work. AFAIK I am the only person building these on earth..that in itself is frightening, there used to be a mob in the USA, but I think they went bum up, they were the reason I decided to build my own. I got a quote for one for my TAK (in the USA) and it was an outrageous price from memory around $300 USD then there was freight, so all up it would have been around $350USD and that was close to 15 years ago. So I decided to make my own. Did quite a bit of research and finally designed my own version which has since changed a lot from the original, hopefully for the best.
Obviously I am a tad bored with this isolation stuff, so decided to give a brief history of my light box evolution.:)
