G’day Peter,
My ed80 light box is still going strong, it’s a good piece of kit.
Without scrolling through, I could be up for RedCat 51 light box, with mini Anderson terminals, is that something you have done before/ want to do. Happy to take the chat to PM.

Hi mate, as far as the connectors go, nope not used them. If anyone wants a different connection, I am happy to leave the end of the power cord just tinned.
The Red cat, not heard of that one. So if you want, come up on my email and we can discuss. exfso2@aussiebb.com.au:thumbsup:

Hi, how much for a 240v (or USB powered, no 12v) light box to suit a Skywatcher EVOSTAR ED80?
Exfso
27-08-2020, 01:32 PM
Sorry mate, I only do the 12vdc or 9vdc version.
If you could come up with a 240ac power supply to suite a 12vdc input using a 2.1mm plug, that will work.

I have noticed recently there is a trend for people to ask me about light boxes etc and I do respond only not to hear a word from them ever again. I believe this is quite rude. Please if someone wants information please have the decency to at least let me know you have received my response, this is just common courtesy IMHO.:screwy:

Yes I would agree with this, I got the idea off the web in 2004 from memory and modified it to suite and obviously use LEDS. Light boxes for larger scopes are a challenge and getting the bits and pieces can be a bit of a problem. My original was borne out of the fact I did not want to pay the ridiculous prices that were being charged for this in the USA, and I believe that manufacturer is no longer in business. From memory a light box for my TAK 130 was in the order of $600US then, and that was a lot of dollars over 20 years ago. Members on the forum got wind of what I had done and wanted me to make them for their scopes. That is it in a nutshell.

I have mentioned this before, but it appears to be happening much more. Not sure if it is the covid causing people to change or what. When someone wants information on the light boxes, I automatically advise them to contact me via my email address. Now it is obvious that only about 50% even bother, and those that do there is a high percentage that don't even have the decency to acknowledge that I have responded to them with information etc.
Not impressed I must admit.

I am getting very sick of people asking for a quote for a light box, which I send and not getting any sort of response at all, it is common courtesy to at least acknowledge my replies. Just to put a word in for Peter, I ordered a light box from him shortly after Christmas last year.
To my surprise, the box was made, packaged and shipped on or around New Year's. I certainly didn't expect him to give up holiday time like that.
Now that I have things (mostly) worked out, the box is invaluable for getting proper flats taken. All I have to do now is find where the dust bunnies are and evict them from my gear!

Hey Peter. I'm done holding my galaxy tab up to my scope for flats.
I have an Askar 65PHQ, the od of the dew shield is 88.08mm..
Are they flst panels or still core flute boxes? Slimmer the better for me, and if it could have a 5.5mm x 2.1 male dc plug that would be epic.
Pm me a price and I'll flick you the cash.

Just throwing in a quick message for the masses - I received my light box very promptly after we got the specifications nailed down.
The build quality is brilliant, the included dimmer made getting the correct ADU counts for flats a breeze and the packing of the parcel was absolutely bullet proof - nigh on indestructable!
You'll not find a better value for money flat illumination solution anywhere!

Perhaps your inbox is full?
I wanted to ask about LED's and acrylic for another project but it's nothing I can't use a light board for till I figure it out myself.
I want to back-light a canvas print of the moon, it looks amazing with the light board behind it and I was curious what specific acrylic sheet won't show multiple bright spots from the individual LEDs instead of an even lighting. I was also thinking of buying LED strips to do it but thought I'd ask someone who has done this numerous times before.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read through the thread and have only just seen the email address a few posts up.
I'll email and if you have 5 minutes to help with my enquiries I'd much appreciate it, if not I'll buy some items (or see what I likely already have here in LEDs and acrylic) and play myself.

Hi Peter,
for around 18 months I've been working on a small general bluetooth switch for astronomy to control devices like fans, dew heater or Flat panel dimming, really anything that runs on 5V-18V up to 4A as either switched or PWM. It uses bluetooth to communicate with a PC so there are no extra cabling you just plug it in series with the flat panel. Really simple.
I've written 2 ASCOM drivers, one for Switches and the other for Flat Panel control, the same device does both.
The ASCOM flat panel driver can be used to control the on/off - brightness of a LED or EL flat panel by applications like NINAs Flat Wizard or SG Pro to automate flat imaging.
I've been using it now for around 6 months with a LED panel I made, I'm happy with the results.
To get the PCB manufactured I had to order 30, so I was hoping to maybe sell them on IIS.
Your light boxes have been popular and I would really like to test my bluetooth switch with one. I would be happy to send you a bluetooth switch if you're able to test it and let me know. PM me if you need more information.
Thanks,
Chris.

I'm new to this forum so I must be missing something. What is used to ensure that the light is evenly spread in the light box? As what I heard, even high-end computer and phone screens have about 2% uneven in brightness. Isn't that going to be an issue?
Exfso
03-06-2025, 11:21 PM
I use Leds reflecting back on the inside of the rear of the light box and that light is further diffused by a "diffuser" it just works well, I have built over 400 of these for astro photography and have rarely had any problems. Only time was when a guy left his turned on for over 3 months and the Leds deteriorated, I replaced these for him and as far as I know it still works well.
I have built these for scopes as small as 50 mm right up to 14" plane wave beasts.
