I have just recently completed building myself a couple of light boxes and I am very pleased with the results. If anyone is interested in me building one for them, PM me and I can discuss price etc, one thing is for sure, they are going to be at least a third of the price of imported ones, and IMHO work just as well. The two attached images will give you some sort of idea of my construction. My method of construction allowes the light box to fit over the front of the telescope/dew shield, much like a cover so one does not need to balance it on the scope.
I use a 12v lighter type connector for the power, and each LED is rated at between 6000mcd and 12000mcd depending on the size of the box required.
If interested please feel free to ask any questions.

I have seen Peter's work first hand and his workmanship is very good. The O/S versions are very expensive and operate the same way. Peter is offering a service for those that are not able to make them. If you want one made, please let him know.

how would you go sending one of these from one side of AU to the other?

Exfso
25-09-2009, 07:28 PM
My answer is "very carefully". These will need to be packed in wads of bubble wrap. Having said that, eggs get freighted, and they seem to get through ok by enlarge. All crud aside, I would do my best to ensure that they are adequately protected for transport, also insurance costs bugger all, as an addition.;)

My light box arrived at work yesterday, didn't see it till this morning as I have been crook with a cold and tried shaking it by having yesterday off.

I can recomend Peter's workmanship and his packaging is equally superb. I would highly recomend that if you have two left hands like me when it comes to this sort of project buy one from Peter, you will not be disappointed.

Thank you so much Peter for your excellent light box and the speedy turn around.

One very happy customer here.

I picked up my light box today, too. Very impressed with the way it is made and finished. Also very light weight. I haven't had the opportunity to test it fully as yet, but when turned on, it produces a very evenly illuminated field.
Good job, thanks Peter!!

Trevor, I am not a professional, just an enthusiastic amateur. I do each box on the fly as it were, and as I have found really no two scopes are the same. Some have differing dovetails etc that get in the way, so cutouts are necessary. As I am in Adelaide, I reckon I am about midway between the west and east. Producing kits I would leave up to the professionals. I am really only doing these as a hobby and to help people out. I make bugger all really on what I do and the time I spend, I just enjoy tinkering.
I have no special skills, and really anyone that is handy with a soldering iron and has a bit of patience cutting and gluing the board can do it. The part that I hate is the covering as I have yet to find an adhesive plastic covering that sticks properly to this foam board. They do have to be covered as this protects them from dew and the owners from getting belted for lighting up the field when the box it turned on. It dead set glows like a diffuse lamp until it is covered.

After having tinkered with my own light box, which I'm very happy with! I was completely blown away by the workmanship of an example of Peters tinkering at Snake Valley. Design, construction and operation were all 100%.

And no, he isn't paying me anything to say this, I am just impressed when non-professionals continually produce great products.

Throw those t-shirts back in the draw where they belong!

Great Job Peter.

One of the guys bokglob, AKA Darrell ordered a box for an ED80, I have had it completed for nearly a week and he is not answering emails. If I dont hear from him by the end of the weekend, I will put it up for sale. $115.00 including postage to Aust Capital City or suburbs. It is tested and works a treat.
I think in future if anyone wants a box I will be asking some sort of deposit, I dont like getting left holding the bag so to speak.

Just an update, Darrell has now contacted me and is still taking the box.

Hi Peter,

if you are interested we can cooperate on making these. I can cut all parts for box shell for you with my laser according to your requirements and you will need to assemble them put leds and wiring and it's ready to go.

I have been thinking about making them myself but I am not good at wiring and all electronic stuff.

cheers,

Mike

Might not be a bad sort of idea if we were in the same city, cant see it working with the distance involved. No two boxes are identical I basically tailor the box to suit what someone wants for their scope. Not sure how a laser would go cutting this foam board, it is a mongrel at times, mind you I have developed a bit of a knack now after having built nearly 20 boxes. I suppose if one was to start making these commercially that would definitely be the way to go, but I am really only doing this as a hobby thing and to help out people who for various reasons cannot make their own boxes.
I definitely appreciate your thoughts though.

ozstockman
06-11-2009, 10:33 AM
shouldn't be a problem to cut through foam with a laser and in case it doesn't work I have a CNC router that can cut through anything.

However you are right about distance. If you are not in Victoria that will add extra expense. You don't have location in your profile so I thought that you could be in Victoria.

cheers,

Mike

Light boxes are used in Astro imaging to take Flat frames.

Exfso
09-04-2010, 11:56 PM
This is a brief description of what flat frames are all about.

Flat frames are essential if the faintest parts of a target are to be detected. The basic concept is to point the system to a uniformly illuminated light source and take an exposure. The resultant exposure will capture all of the imperfections in the system - vignetting, dust on the optical surfaces, off-axis optics and other disturbances.

The imperfections etc are then removed in stacking the flats with the other frames. A pretty rough explanation but I think you should get the general gist.

Some people use a white T shirt the next day to achieve this, but it has its limitations. It is much better to take the flats at the same time as the primary image as nothing in the image train should be changed before taking flats. You can then move onto the next image, move your focuser etc without hassles as you already have flats prepared for that particular image.

Just for information, I have now tested a box with a dimmer and it works pretty well in dimming evenly to about half maximum illumination. Should be ok for people experiencing problems with CCD cameras and exposure times for flats. I will post an image of the box I am building that is "dimmed" when I finish it.

They are beautifully constructed, weigh nothing, but, are rigid and strong.

He made one for my FSQ-106N. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to use it, yet. But, if it works as good as it looks, it'll be a ripper!

If I ever get another scope, I'll be coming back for more.

Many Thanks
Terry

Exfso
04-02-2011, 12:43 PM
Hi Terry, no, they come totally assembled. To try and make them a flat pack would be a real work of art, they are quite light, and need to be glued together. And finally covered with matt black vinyl. Given the size of your scope, freight would be an issue, and I suggest it would not be economical to try and send something this size to NZ. It is a real pain here in Aust, as Aust Post won't accept cartons over a certain size and one then has to use couriers.
I have appended an image of a box halfway through construction, and I think you will see why it is not viable to try and make them a flat pack for transportation.

G'day Peter, thinking about getting one of these for my 10" SkyWatcher Black Diamond reflector. Not sure what dimensions you need or if you've done them before and already have the info. How far down the tube does the lightbox sit? Wondering if it comes up to the finder mount and I'll have to look at how close my Telrad and focuser are mounted.

I'd be after the dimming version, and instead of a cigarette lighter plug would it be possible to get an RCA male connector instead? That way I can plug it into a spare 12V socket on my dew heater controller. How may amps does it draw? Assume not much.

Please PM me with price etc to Brisbane.

I have just cleared out my PM box, so anyone who wanted a lightbox and has not got back to me will have to resend their PM. I have kept stuff up to 2 months back from now. There are a few people who I have contacted with a quote that have not got back to me for whatever reason.

Peter, can you make a reducer so I can use my C8 lightbox do duty for my ED127 too, or is it simpler to get another lightbox.

Exfso
13-02-2012, 11:06 AM
Andrew, I could do that and have done so in the past, but I need the exact measurements of the light box. Usually I make the sleeve as I call it when I make the so called "master" light box, and I have it with me to refer to so the sleeve is a smooth fit. Without the current light box in situ, I am somewhat relying on the measurements provided to make one that is a good fit. Also obviously I need the outside diameter of the dewshield of the 127. Let me know what you decide via PM and I will get back to you with a cost.

Exfso
01-03-2012, 11:38 AM
Just for information I have had to clear out my PM box as it was nearly full. I have had a lot of people I sent messages to regarding queries about light boxes who have not replied to me, so if anyone is in that category, I no longer have the quotes I sent and they will have to be re-done. I cant really believe the amount of people who want a quote who do not have the decency to acknowledge my messages. It matters not to me if they want a light box or not, a simple yes or no thanks would suffice. I am trying to provide a service at a very reasonable cost for something that is not readily available.

Wow, how long is a piece of string. They are used for creating "flats" for asto photography in my case. They remove dust motes and vignetting. Obviously all this enhances the final image. There is a lot of information out there on what they do, best to do a search for a much more detailed description of their use.

My lightbox arrived on Friday so beautifully packaged it took all evening to unwarp! Thank goodness the sky was cloudy.

Thanks Pete, you've done a wonderful job. I'm sure if you calculated the hours you put in to making the lightboxes by the money you charge it's virtually a labour of love.

Currently I am in a shoulder sling, apparently I have to wear it for 6 weeks, what a pain. One thing that they put on me in surgery was a little device called a "pain-buster", now this works a treat.
http://www.iflo.com/prod_onq_classic.php It deadened the area for 48hrs, which was brilliant. Having said that, once it runs out of juice, you get the full on pain returning.

Light box for 8" SCT arrived today :), well packed and all intact. Just as well you sent the tracking number as they didn't leave a card ! but no problem it was at the post office.

Very nicely made, fits beautifully without need to cut out for top and bottom bars. With the telescope pointing straight up it sits nicely around the rim and the ends of the bars stop it from sliding down.

Very pleased with it, well worth getting you to make it, far better job than I could have done. Just need to put a little tab handle on it so I can handle it easily as I only have one hand.
