It usually all starts to happen after about 8.30pm. Once dinner is over and the kiddlies are all locked up safely in their roooms.
It's not unusual for the action to keep going until 2am.
Great company for when you're out \at the scope.

Hi,

In my experience it is generally quite civilised. There have been one or two slightly sharper exchanges but nothing like you get in the forums here sometimes :lol:.

It's much more like what you would hear when sitting round a fire with a drink, even to having 2 or even 3 conversations going. It is not moderated live though, so the same degree of good manners is required.

There are some topics which come up more often, eg astrophotography (I don't know why that would be :rofl:), however you can raise any reasonable subject.

Try it sometime. It won't always be that anyone is there though as there is no schedule I know of :welcome:

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against chatting. Although, Mike has pointed out as you all know, this site is open to all ages. Some material may not be appropriate. Last thing you want is bad reputation for the site because someone blabbed the wrong thing, or in the wrong manner, or a slip of the tongue etc...then we all pay the price.

I haven't been a member for very long but, I like the site the way it is personally. If chatting with absolute freedom of speech is your flavour, those inclined could always branch off and chat elsewhere at a common venue. I know it would not be as convenient as being on the site in real time, it would be the next best thing though and could still be fun.

Maybe someone should start IceInSpaceII the <R> rated version heh heh heh :P

The 'Chatroom' has nothing to do with IceInSpace, it is not owned by IceInSpace, nor is it endorsed by IceInSpace.
It is not even connected to IceInSpace in any way.

You say "branch off and chat elsewhere at a common venue".
That's exactly what it is! You already have your wish :lol:
It is a totally seperate entity that belongs to Doug, who happens to be a member in IceInSpace among other Forums, who makes his chatroom available free of charge for all to use.

It is purely by Doug's invitation that the chatroom is available for anyone.

It is NOT an 'Astronomy Only' place. It is a chatroom without restrictions, but Doug may delete any person who he believes is ruining the chatroom for others.

Now, can the drama's about 'Astro Content' and other expectations go away.
If you have a problem with it, PM the owner of the chatroom.
If it isn't Astro enough for people, you can go open an 'Astronomy' chatroom. No-one is stopping you. :)

I personally like going into Doug's chatroom and chatting with the others in there about non-astro stuff :thumbsup:

And some nights it gets quite busy in there which shows that there are a lot of members happy to get together and not talk Astro, and thankyou to Doug for providing a place for us to chinwag :thumbsup:

Thats a fact. It will never be absolute. While I own it it will only be as free as I allow it to be.
It's bad luck but thats the way it is. I allow pretty much everything but draw the line at a few things.
If you abuse the freedom you'll get told don't worry.
Self moderation seems to be working so far and to that end I leave it pretty much to those on the site.

Social etiquette and respect amongst the small group of people on a chat line is just as important as in any other social situation. To have total freedom of speech by blatantly ignoring social etiquette just begs to have ones block knocked off. There is generally a friendly, warm, welcoming atmosphere in the chatroom, with this tone being pretty much set by the regulars who frequent it.
The fact that one asks and questions this, begs the response that one would be out on there caboose in no time flat after upsetting quite a few people.

This thread has taken an unusually strange turn since it was started so long ago and after 15 pages. That is because, put simply, the chat room is important to the people who frequent it, we love that room and the people in it and we will defend it.

Hi John, this is the second time the chatroom has been hammered so I can't keep repairing some twitts attacks. In the near future I can only see the security getting tighter than it is now requiring a true secure login. Terry has kindly taken to look after things while I am away on holidays and his efforts are very much appreciated. Without Terry's work the chat room would be shut down until I get home.

Much as I would like to keep it very free and easy it just can't keep going like it is. Sorry but you can look forward to having to get a personal password and logging on like you do here.

Hmm the registration is even more dodgy than the Qld Astrofest one. I tried to register, the site rejected my name, tried again with another username, it then rejected my email. Strangely, I got a confirmation for the first rejected user but can't log in after confirmation. Error is "you cannot access the private section of this site"

User is same as my IIS user.

registration should be pretty straight forward

any username
password greater than 5 letters (6 or more including capitals/lower case/numerals if you wish)
and legitimate email address (yes even gmail yahoo and hotmail)

you should then get a confirmation email
click on the activation link in the email

and then i will authorise your registration

give it another go mate

OK found the problem, looks like it's possible to register at both your chat site and normal online site, I didn't look far enough back to pick up the chat address.... :face:
