IRC = Internet Relay Chat

There are servers located all around the world that are there just for people to chat in real time(text)
It's kinda old hat now, as old as the web itself.
Things like ICQ then MSN followed by Myspace then Facebook and now Twitter have kinda killed it, but it's still there and in use... and it's realtime.
Need a client program like mIRC to use it though.

I vote not sure:

1) I, like Simon, spent many years in IRC and know how addictive it can be. I'm not sure I'd want the excuse to go down that line again! I spend enough time posting messages as it is :rolleyes:

2) Some conversations in chat would replace threads which would have otherwise contained useful information which because they're in a chat rather than a thread will not be searchable by other people. Eg, someone asks how to take a dark frame in chat - that information will not be found by others searching later like it would have been in a thread.

The server issue can be offset by using a Java client and an established IRC Chat server network.
I've already created an UNOFFICIAL IceInSpace chat room on DALnet if anyone would like to see what it's all about. The channel is simply called #IceInSpace
A number of people have already dropped in, I'm almost always there(except tonight) and it looks like Humayun(Octane) is hanging around.
If you need help just ask :)

If you'd like to check it out, (as I said, I'll be pretty quiet 'till later tonight)

I voted yes. If there was a chat room, I'd use it. General Chat is really the only forum I participate in, until I actually get a telescope. Aside from the astronomy aspect, it'd be the only Ozzie chat room I'd participate in. Might be a great way to make new friends.

However, if a chat room is successful, I think that it will result in a siginificant decrease in posts across the board, and that might not be a good thing for the forum.

Roger's point no. 2 is a big one - this site is such a mountain of searchable info, there have been concerns in the past about losing valuable info others could learn from (often only a small % of people post in forums they have read and learned from).

Wouldn't it be possible to create a dedicated astro channel on a suitable chat site? (umm - apologies if that's what some of the posts already say - not a chat junkie here as you can tell).... :P

I must say I've checked in to the DarkskyAU flashchat quite a few times recently when I've been out imaging... Its usually been empty... It used to be fairly busy at one stage from 8:30pm EST through till at least 1 or 2AM..

Hi All, For all you folk who would like a chat room to use there is one just sitting on my web site doing nothing these days. It is free, no real log on required, just pick an alias or use your name and log on. I have plenty of band width and would rather see it used than left as it is now.

The novelty of a chat room does wear off a bit after a while but it can be interesting. No conversations on this room are kept or stored so feel free to use it.. All I ask is you try and keep it nice and polite for everyones sake.

A few posts ago Ken asked if there was a way to use flaschat on his Ipad.

Ipad/Pod doesn't support flash, but there is a way you can use the iPad although it's a bit covoluted.

You need to use a PC with remote desktop capabilities or VNC and the iPod/Pad as a remote terminal. There is an iPod/Pad Remote Desktop app ITap and also other VNC apps are available.

Once you have enabled Remote desktop on your PC you can use the iPod/Pad client to connect and use flashchat as a remote desktop session, I can confirm it works, it's a little more effort, but a lot easier than carting a laptop or PC, Monitor Keybd and mouse from room to room (or the dunny for H (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=591970&postcount=49)) ...:whistle:

To use Remote Desktop/Itap you need either XP Pro, Vista or Win7 Pro or ultimate and the iTap app.

Otherwise if you have XP home, Vista Win7 Home, Home premium etc you'll need to install VNC and get a VNC client app for the iPod/Pad.

As a bonus once you have RDP or VNC working you can control your PC for any use including astro (monitoring PHD or using the Autostar suite for example).

Thanks for the reply but I actually asked for a non flash site that people use for the chartroom. I work in IT so I'm aware of and use VNC all the time but was just asking if anyone used the chat room on a iPad with a non flash site using java via vnc or html5 for example.

Is this the chat room or should I go elsewhere albiet I'll rant here unless directed elsewhere,

My wife broke her arm 5 months ago and because of her MS it's only just healing now, at one stage the Quakes where thinking of operating which involved removing a piece of her hip (bone) to put in her arm.

Well when I heard this the first thought I had was "the hip bones connected to her arm bone" thereby changing the lyrics of the song and the whole human anatomy.

Needless too say after visit 6 to the specialists they decided 6 weeks ago not too operate and hopefully by the next visit around mid October she'll take her arm brace off.

So while everyone else whinges about their problems I've been dealing for the last 5 months with , shopping, cooking, cleaning, caring, working full time and while in that time suffering from a bout of pheumonia. Alas I still have a flemmy cough every morning since being deemed cured of it a few weeks ago.

To top it off even after my darling wife has her brace removed there will be a period of physio to return strength to her arm, so it could be a few more months before she's back to some form of normality.

In all this time we've had to ask our friends to come too our place, only ventured out twice together socially, several times to the hospital, argued a lot, cried and joked over the situation.

We are in dire need of a holiday but this will have too wait, life goes on.

Life indeed goes on. There's a few of us here who missed out on the bed of roses. Still, if you focus on what you can do, rather than what you can't, it helps, a lot. I've recently started meditation to control stress, and that has given me so much peace. I'm in control now. A wonderful feeling to have.
