Sometimes you can get what is called a horseshoe vortex, which is like a small tornado up in the clouds, or on the side of a cumulus clud. The often bend over themselves into a horseshoe shape, hence the name. I've seen one myself here in Perth, and while uncommon I have seen a few photos of them. But I see you say that your cloud wasn't bent. I'm sure someone will have seen this before, hope you find a pic on the site jjj referenced.
