News is a bit better - I emailed them back and complained politely about the shipping, and they have come back with a list of cheaper rates. That $100 rate was express with insurance :-)

without insurance is 39 euro.

Cheapest rate is 12 euro, but that will take 1 to 2 month to arrive

I also did ask about VAT. No response yet.
