Yeah, it could be. I know I struggled to find anything I thought suitable in my collection, and conditions and opportunities conspired against me as far as getting a new shot and entering it. I don't let anyone else's image stop me from entering either. It may just be coincidence that the obscure topics force people to take a photo especially and so to be a bit more creative...
