Delos 14mm and Nagler 13mm T6

Had second light with the Delos tonight in my 110mm refractor. Since I've bought a number of eyepieces recently I was keen to try them all out, and was particularly interested to compare the Delos with my most recent arrival, a 13mm Nagler T6. I bought the Nagler from an IISer in WA, and while it was in transit I bought the Delos 14mm. Until tonight I assumed I would be selling the Nagler since they are only 1mm apart, but not so...

I haven't learned my way around the southern sky particularly well so I concentrated on the obvious showpieces - e.g. the Tarantula nebula, 47 Tuc and, later, the Orion nebula. In each case I used the Delos first since it gives the lower magnification. And each time, with these bright objects, I preferred the view with the Nagler, probably because of the extra magnification.

I did some sweeping later on and came across two fuzzy objects in the same field with the Delos. I didn't have my star charts with me and even after coming home I'm not sure what they were. However, the important thing is that the view was better with the Delos. This time the slight extra magnification with the Nagler was enough to dim the image a bit too much.

So, to my surprise, I'll be keeping the Nagler as well as the Delos. It seems that sometimes a very slight change in power, just 1mm's worth, can be the difference between a good view and a great view.

Of course the Delos is more comfortable to use with its 20mm of eye relief, and is usable with glasses, which I feel I might need in the not-too-distant future. It's also a a fair bit heavier than my other eyepieces, so occasionally balance was a little bit off.

I'm very happy with both eyepieces.

That's a good point.

They are also very different in use. Although the Delos has the comfort factor of 20mm eye relief, I really enjoy using the Naglers, hence my quest to obtain more!

:question: I wonder how my old T1 Nagler 13mm brick would fair with these 2 newbys ? My T1 13mm is an awsome 82 degree window into space abit a little heavy ..:lol: .hmmmm ?

I certainly love the small size of the Type 6 Naglers.

I have the 11mm, 7mm and 5mm type 6s, and a 16mm type 5. They are so compact and so much easier to use than the original Naglers.

Yeah. Had an older 9mm a few years ago but didn't really care for it.

:shrug: Yes they may be easier to use , but ( there is always a BUT ) is your scope/mount set up able to handle these T1's T2's and more to the point are these whipper snappers better than the origonals ? :question: .
I was out at 2am this morning looking at Europa's shadow and moon transit , just above the GRS , using my 13mm T1 and it was awsome in my new 2415mm f/l , 210mm diameter scope ,, this eyepiece / scope combo is really good at 185x ,, .;) . hit the sack at 4am , great eyepiece and awsome viewing .

I had all the originals many years ago , Brian. IMHO, the new ones produce just as good an image. I think the reduction in size has been mostly brought about by the development of newer, more exotic glass types.:)

:thumbsup: I hear you Larry , but there is something about grabbing my 13mm T1 and looking thru her or the other monster my 20mm T2 ,, the quality and build gives me a major thrill , not to mention the views ( non astronomers are impressed to the max! ) ,, ps. I am on the look out for a 2nd hand T4 31mm ,,, any sellers ??? ;)

But yea Laurie it takes a big scope / mount set up to handle the old Naglers , so yes mate for you fella's with smaller scopes the new T4-5's are made for you .:D .

I'm using a 26mm Nagler type 5 on my Stellarview 80mm and NG102mm. That's a big lump of glass, but they handle it ok. Used to have a 20mm Nagler-nice eyepiece!

My 14mm delos is the best mid-mag ranged eyepiece I have ever looked through. It's better then the Naglers I've looked through, sharper, flat field , coating etc etc. But, I'm not going to say for a second its any better then my Pentax XW10 (although its better then the XW14 I've looked through) but, it's as good as. Praise doesn't get any higher then that.

It's also easily available to buy in Australia at actually better prices then the US. Unlike Denk's which only come up on the used market about as often as a Venus transit.

Morton your review was with smallish refractors interesting indeed,. But, you should see how they perform in a fast 12"+ at a dark sky site. Absolutely staggering!

Slightly off topic but where does the ES 14 100 degree fit in with the other 14mm eyepieces?
Anyone who wants a Denk 14 can get one, or a pair direct from the Denk site. Took a month to get mine last year.

I'd be interested in the answer to this as well, although I'm pretty sure I don't need a 100º eyepiece as 82º is more than wide enough for me.

Looking back at my original post, it's ironic to note that I ended up not keeping any Naglers in the end! My favourite eyepieces are definitely the Delos 14mm and Pentax XW 10mm. Everything looks great through them.
