USB issues

Lately, I keep having to reload the drivers for my Orion Starshoot autoguider - if I plug it in to the USB port, it will do the "found" sound, then a second found sound, but not functional in PHD guiding (just a white screen). If I plug it in the USB 3 slot, I get the found sound, then the double "NO!" sound :)

I keep having to reload the drivers - I use the x32 x64 drivers direct from Orion's website. I am running Win 7, and did have to reload Windows recently after a dumba$$ technician... we won't go there.

So, should I reload the USB port drivers? OR? It's driving me nuts!

ahhhh, isn't it fun.
You'll just have to be firm with your computer. You might have to reload the drivers a couple of times for the camera and the ports, just to let it know you mean business.
Once you get it working, use the same usb lead and same usb port each time.

I can vouch for the using of the same USB port all the time. Some camera's go berzerk if choosing other than the port you installed it on, which makes very little sense to me but whatever!

Ok, thanks. Funny, the Canon doesn't care which USB I plug it into, but the autoguider does, as does the silly Moonlight focuser (frustrating now, as NONE work in the USB3 port EXCEPT the canon) - this ASUS only has 3 ports too, and of course using a multiport adaptor won't fly with the guider and focuser...

A powered port should work.

Use a powered hub or powered extension cable.

I've been told some laptops don't output full power through USB ports.

Keep cable length as short as possible (<=3m unless its a powered cable, I find).

Using the same USB port consistently can help.
