Okay this is just wrong. Recently I bought a new Asus K55V 2.5 gig i5 laptop with 8 gig ram and 2 gig Nvidia graphics, Win 7 64 bit . For laughs I thought I would compare it to my desktop i7 3.3 gig, 4 gig ram, 1.2 gig GTX470 AMP video and Win 7 32 bit.

The scenario, I configured DSS exactly the same way for both machines and ran a time test stacking 10 light frames. The result was not what I expected. I thought my 2 year old quad core desktop would take half the time of the 3rd gen dual core laptop. It didn't. It was merely a couple of seconds faster. What's more the fans in the desktop scream to full speed to try and cool the processor.

As Pauline would say, please explain?

I'm guessing 8 gig RAM trumps 4 gig when working with image files.

You'd also have to do 2 x fresh OS installs to be sure of a level playing field...

32bit os vs 64bit? with the extra 4GB of ram the 64bit os probably does a lot less page swapping.

As said its windows 64 +extra ram , Win32 can only use 3.5g memory with a fraction of the data thru put . Also unless the program is multi processor aware, the extra cores wont help.

I think DSS is multi core aware. I see a message pop up that says using x number of processors, 8 for the quad core and 4 for the dual core, so it's detecting threads I guess.

Then most likely the extra ram +64x but its very hard to compare 2 different systems, just so many variables like drive speed , ram speeds and timings and mobo design .

Yeah it's not a perfect test, but interesting all the same.

Laptops use a mobile processor which does not run as fast as a desktop processor. That's why they produce less heat.
A fast desktop quad core like your i7 3.3 is as good if not better than your (slower) mobile processor the Intel Core i5 3210m.
If your software is not optimised or written for a quad core, it will not use them.
