Supplier of steel pipe required.

Simple question: I need a supplier of rolled steel tube/pipe for a pier somewhere in Melbourne, preferable North or West of the CDB. Has anyone have any dealings with such a steel supplier you could recommend?

Any steel supplier lol, all you have to do is spend some time on the phone and find the cheapest. You will find alot will only supply 6.4m length's so state straight away to save wasting time. I use http://www.lockbarsteel.com/ because they will cut whatever you want though there prices arn't that great there service and supply makes up for it.

Thanks Chris, I found them on a Google search late last night. Good to get a recommendation from another 'pier builder' :thumbsup: And close to home. Did you use Black steel pipe: http://www.steelsolutions.com.au/steel-pipe-black-medium-c-103.html I was looking at the 164x4.8mm

I've established that my pier height needs to be approx. 850mm from floor to top plate. This takes into account a leveling plate and some adaption plate for an NEQ6.

150mm Diameter scheduel 40 , carbon steel .
Thats 168mm , 4.5mm wall .
It will be perfect .

Hi Stephen,

My pier will be 1.7m including top plates. The reason for the tall pier is that my observatory (still to build) will be raised 600mm above ground.

Pier will be mounted onto the existing 250mm thick concrete, the concrete was originally poured for two 5000ltr rainwater tanks, I have since emptied one and move the other. The observatory will be a roll off roof.

The pier construction will be made up of a base plate (600 x 600 x 20mm) pier will be 250mm hollow square with 9mm wall, top plates will be 300 x 300 x 20mm, pier gusseted to base plate using 10mm plate. Will be filled with sand once installed.

Hi Stephen, did you get your steel? I'm at the design stage I went to Malouf Steel in Brooklyn today and purchased a 300 x 300 x 10mm base plate and 168 dia x 950mm rolled tube for just under $60!

Chris that is one solid pier! 20mm thick flanges! Makes mine sound a little inadequate :lol:

I came across a laser cutter who will cut the top flange in a circle and also cut the angled 200x50mm gussets.
