Hi guys, Alice has asked me for your assistance, she has gone to Canberra to visit her brand new grandson.

She has taken her Lappy and has tried to use her sons Telstra (drive} to no avail.

We Alice and I are usually on our Gate way service and it works fine, now she informs me that she can not get her Lappy to connect to the service, using a paid account.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.:)

Leon

Do you mean a telstra wireless internet thing that plugs into a USB port?
If so, my wife has one also. They only work on the original computer that it was installed on. If you change computers you have to phone the help people at telstra, wait a few hours for them to answer :P and the original owner has to approve the change of computer.
I gave up and didn't bother but it can be done.

Cheers

Terry

Hi Leon

If it is a standard telstra ADSL modem she will need to connect to it with a LAN cable (not USB). If the LAN port is operational (driver loaded) connection should be automatic. Check the control panel-system-hardware to make sure the LAN port Driver is loaded.

If the Telstra Modem is connected to a wireless router (or has one built in) she will need to find its name and probably provide a key. If there is a router look underneath it there will be a label with its name and default key.

I have just had a similar setup at our apartment in London. There was a standard BT modem and I needed to connect to it using the LAN cable. This was found automatically when I connected the cable.

Later I bought a cheap wireless router (Belkin) and installed it from the disk (automatic but took a few minutes). This gave me the convenience of no cables draped across the floor. Worked great especially on skype when I called home.

Leon,

Don't fap about on here -- get her to call Telstra and they will guide her over the phone exactly what to do. This is one of those situations where it's much easier to call. :)
