I bought a 30" Dell that uses an IPS panel. It is factory calibrated for sRGB amongst others. It has ten bit colour. It costs about $1800. It has made life a lot easier to get the 'colour' correct.

Check out the Asus 23 inch monitor here. $389

It may be the answer for your image processing tasks with a calibrated monitor.

We have these at work, still required some calibration but are very close out of the box, and a great panel for the money.

I have the Dell 27" (U2711) and it's fantastic, same as the 30" except a bit smaller. It's normally around the $900 mark, but on special now for $719. The 30" is also on special for $1359 (sorry Bert!).

The 30" at that price is a bargain, but I find it a little bit too big, I have to move my head too much! The 27" is perfect.

Cheers,
Jason.

So I they're calibrated for sRGB, what happens if you're working with images in Adobe RGB for printing, rather than sRGB for screen/web display?

If you need to recalibrate them then you can, the colour management on them is exceptional so you can tweak to your heart's content. On non IPS panels, usually the colour management system is difficult and full of compromise, you make one adjustment and it throws others out. On these screens it is much easier to hit the calibration of your choice, and the uniformity is great.

The Asus has Adobe RGB built in as a profile

The rotation is bloody handy too.

I used to have a wife with a very large bum. Guess I got used to taking in large vistas with one look.

I second the dell is panels. Very good. I use one but still have had to calibrate it with a calibration tool.

I think that's what they call "Majesty Factor".

Cheers,
Jason.

Ta for that.

Do you still calibrate them with a Spyder or similar?

I have had the Dell 30" for nearly 2yrs and have 24" as well , yes expensive
but close to as good as it gets without being rediculous
