Televue Delos

Has anyone gotten their hands on/viewed with one of the new Delos eyepieces, particularly the 10mm? Opinions?

Nice EP, I've had my 10mm for around 6 - 8 months and have used it on my TOA-130 and SKY-90 (1000mm & 500mm FL respectively) and gives useful magnification in both scopes. The usual TeleVue quality with pinpoint stars to the edge on the TOA but the SKY-90 really needs a flattener. Because I wear glasses, the Delos suits me better (regarding the field of view) than the Ethos range which are heavier and longer. People without glasses will probably like the adjustable sliding upper barrel which is better than the old radians which have click stops. Have no issues with eye placement as well.

I personally haven't looked through one although I have been reading up on them as I have been trying to decide for myself whether I should get a Delos or a Pentax XW which, IMHO is why the Delos was created and the EP the Delos range are intended to compete against.

Anyhow, there was a 6mm up for sale not so long ago so you could ask that member for their thoughts. Other than this a friend of mine did a side by side comparison between a 9T6 and a 10mm Delos and he didn't seem too impressed with the Delos in comparison to the Nagler.

However, as Steve points out this is a real matter of what you are after - and in the circumstance of Delos and XW's it is a comfortable view (ER) while still retaining a reasonably large fov.

Yep, that's my conundrum. The Pentax's appear to perform well in short focal lengths, so I was about to order one when I read a comparison with the Delos. Now I'm stuck.

I just picked up a 6mm Delos. I have had it out twice. Really nice EP for sure!
I'd say the XW's are about the same. I did a review of it on CN...

Thanks Brian! I agree! The 22mm Pan is really cozy to use on the eyes! I love the eye relief I get from this EP too. In my 10" f/4.72 Skywatcher reflector, there is coma, (it would work way better with a paracorr no doubt), but the EP is extremely sharp in the inner 75% without a paracorr and no slouch when used with a barlow on the planets as well.

I have no idea why they discontinued it tho??? Great all around EP IMHO.

I have had the 6mm Delos out 2 times and need to spend a lot more time with it under the stars. From what I have seen so far, it is a real winner! Can't wait to try it on some globulars, Saturn and Mars @ 332x!

:eyepop: 332x would be awsome ! I think a 6mm Delos is on my wish list for this year it will compliment the higher power viewing with my 8mm Radian well .
I dont see any coma when using my 22mm Pan when using my F/7.5 NG 127mm triplet , the view is sharp to the edge and stars are perfect , It is used more than my 17mm T4 Nagler , another TV great ! .:thumbsup: .

The 332x is what I get when using the 6mm Delos and my 2"/ 1.6x Antares barlow. The 6mm Delos serves up a native mag of 196x in my 10" f/4.72 reflector! Go for it! grab yourself a Delos !!! :D:thumbsup:

My own feeling about the Delos is that Televue are moving into the 20mm ER widefield market traditionally dominated by the XW's, LVW's, Hypersions/Stratus etc. In this case the lyrics "anything you can do I can do better" from an old musical seem to spring to mind when TV were designing the Delos.

It certainly looks like one impressive and tempting EP

I may be getting a 27mm or 35mm Pan in my near future! I am looking for a Meade 28mm 5000 SWA at the moment tho...as it is close to the 27mm Pano
in performance!

Yes TV eyepieces are special , especially the Panoptics .:hi:
Here is why I dont have a Nagler 31mm .
My Axiom LX31mm thats almost indestinguishable under the stars when compared to a friends TV . :thumbsup:.
Yes a 6mm Delos will round off any collection nicely.

The 31mm Nag is a BEAST !!! I had a 20mm T2 myself !!! Got rid of in in favor of a 22mm Pan only because the 20mm T2 upset the balance of my scope.....even though I had a magnet on the bottom of my scope, as soon as I pulled out the 20mm Nagler, the top of my scope would tip upwards because of the magnet...LOL. I also had a Meade 24mm 5000 UWA which is just like the Axiom 23mm re-branded. It was a good EP as well! I'd love to try out a 20mm Nagler T5 sometime or even a 26mm Nagler T5! :cool:

:eyepop:Woaw I did not realise that the T2 20mm Nagler was so big , it dwarfs the Panoptic !!! What was it like to look thru ? My T2 13mm is a good medium powered eyepiece with a huge field , sharp to the edge and especially good on Jupiter and Saturn .

Hi Brian!

The 20mm Nag T2 is one of the sharpest eyepieces I have ever looked through. This was in my 10" f/4.72 reflector WITHOUT a paracorr. Sharpness right to the edge, but 2.3 pounds of weight on your focuser. If your telescope can handle 2.3 pounds of weight, I would recommend getting one. I don't know if your weight there is measured in stones like Britain, so you would have to convert 2.3 pounds to stones!

What I like about my T2 13mm is when viewing Jupiter with my 127mm triplet , the contrast in that scope being the best , and using the 13mm , the planet is framed in a huge starry field , really really nice :thumbsup:.
I could imagine the Delos being very similar ?
I am looking forward to a few reports on them .

:lol: Yea shes a big bugger all right Wade , but to view thru her on a dark night at nebular, open clusters and the likes in my 127mm is a sight to behold , awsome ! Diamonds on black velvet. ;) .
Oh yea she takes a little balencing but well worth it .

HI Wade,
From my own experiences (have XW 10mm & Delos 6mm) you could not go wrong with either of these EPs. The Delos has remarkably crisp views right to the edge of the FOV but, so does the XW 10mm.

I tend to use the XW more but, only because it suits my easiest scope to use with the magnification I get.... I have had some great views with the Delos - enough to know that you would be happy with one.

Hi Wade,
I use the scope in a cheap but modified f7.7 102mm Meade refractor and I have also used it in my 12' dob (f5) and 6' Mak (f10). It is great in all of them but I use it most in the refractor as it is a great magnification for looking at both planets and nebula. The planetary viewing with the XW and the Mak is incredible. I have used it in the dob but only once or twice.
