Does anyone know how to get the Hickson Galaxy Cluster catalogue into Cartes du Ciel.
I have been trying for the last 4 hours and I am stumped
Pleeeeeeez :help:
Any help how to get it into my CDC will be greatly appreciated :)
Thank you

These are all catalogs packed as exe files and will install to the proper locations.
Hickson galaxies:
hcg: VII/85A Hickson Compact Groups of Galaxies (Hickson 1982) (13kb) http://astroclub.zp.ua/cdc/hcg.zip
These can be put here : c:\Program Files\Ciel\cat\hcg
OR here : c:\Program Files (x32)\Ciel\cat\hcg

Martin, "VII/213 Hickson's Compact groups of Galaxies" does not appear to be there.
This set I built from VII/213 behaves a bit strangely on my laptop. (The centre of galaxy outlines don't match the RA/Dec. Maybe I mucked up the epochs.)
It has one cat for the groups and one for the galaxies.
unzip in "C:\Program Files\Ciel\cat" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Ciel\cat". You will have to change the paths in catgen to rebuild on Win 64 bit.

An interesting hypothesis. IT people don't speak English.
Ken, if you take the default paths, CdC installs its catalogs in "C:\Program Files\Ciel\cat" (32 bit Windows) or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Ciel\cat" (64 bit Windows).
unzip one of the files in that directory, right click the "stars" button in the tool bar, go to the Catalog tab, click the Add button, select the hgc (Martin's) or Hickson (mine) directory, select and open the *.prj file (I have 2 - one for the groups, one for individual galaxies), and enable it with the red button (it turns green). I'll include a new zip. This is a bit tidier. The groups are called hick1 thru hick100, and galaxies hick1a thru hick100d

 Thanks Andrew
Your last post is a bit more Englisher :P
I will attempt to work my way through it (it must make sense, I just need to read it a few more times) and see how I go.
Thanks

OK Andrew, I downloaded the link in your last post, so far so good.
I clicked on the 2nd file because the 1st one didn't say it has any data in it.
That's when I had a heart attack!!! There is a list of 108 files :eyepop:
I don't know what to do :help:
And when I select one how do I 'unzip' it? and I see no 'Stars' in the toolbar :confused2:
I think I'll give up on this exercise and not bother looking for Hickson galaxies
Thanks for trying guys. Bit it's all way beyond my computer knowledge or skills.

The screenshots are from Linux (because that's what is powered up).
When you double click the zip windows will give you an option to extract the files. Give it the path to the CdC cat directory listed earlier, and make sure it keeps the directory structure. Windows might create a directory called hcg or Hickson and expand the dir and file inside that so you'd wind up with cat\Hickson\Hickson\lots-of-files or cat\hcg\hcg\lots-of-files. You can leave it like that or move everything inside the inner directory into the outer one, and delete the unnecessary directory.
The only files you need to concern yourself with are the *.hdr ones.
Then follow the screenshots in order. You could use the menu Setup->Catalog instead of the catalog icon on the toolbar.

Thanks for trying to help, Andrew, but I'm not getting anywhere.
1. I have no idea which of the 108 files to double click on,
2. I picked one and double clicked on it anyway and a window popped open saying 'Windows can't open this file:'
3. I tried another one. Same pop up message.
4. I tried lots of them. Same result.
5. My screen has none of the icons yours shows.
6. I have no idea what this jargon listed below means :(
'click the zip'
'extract the files'
'Give it the path'
'CdC cat directory'
'directory structure'
'expand the dir and file'
'inside the inner directory into the outer one'
'menu Setup->Catalog'
Not knowing all this computer stuff may make me seem stupid to many people reading this.
But I just can't grasp computers over the years I have been trying.
You would not believe the amount of people that have never grasped even the basics of simple Sketching and Drawing over the 'years' I have tried to teach them.
Some of us just can't grasp some things. Mine is Computers.
Never mind about this Hickson stuff Andrew. It is getting me too frustrated and angry trying. I'll just give it a miss. Thanks for trying
Want to learn how to draw?
Download Andrews file, click on it so it opens.
Goto C:\Program Files (x86)\Ciel\cat and drop the whole folder in the zip file in the cat directory.
Then in cdc goto setup -->>catalog, and when in the catalog box click on catalog.
Then click on add and goto C:\Program Files (x86)\Ciel\cat\Hickson and click one of the HDR files and then do the same again (there are 2 HDR files).
Then click on the red dots in the catalog box so they turn green.
On the right hand side you can click on the small rounds under color to change the color the galaxies are.
If you still can't do it, throw away the lappy or get me to do it on Friday :lol:

I precessed the coordinates from B1950 to J2000 and the positions now agree with Vizier.
New zip attached with project files for both the B1950 data and the J2000 data. The ready to use data is using J2000.
I'll delete the zip from my previous message.
