View Full Version here: : Some Internet Help Please
Hi guys maybe some one out there could assist me with a problems we have with our Telstra ISP through a gateway that we have in our rig.
All day it performs perfectly, but when we get to about 7pm onward it continuously drops out and is slower than a snail when it dose actually work.
We are not on the move, and permanently home based at present
Get up in the morning it is perfect again, any help would be appreciated, many thanks.

:) I think its just to many people on line at once Leon , as here in Darwin I usually dont bother going on line untill after 7pm as from 4-7 it does what you are experiencing :mad2: , its almost every day .
Its rubbish for the price we pay for this service .
Hope it gets better for you.
Brian.

Leon,
You'll probably find it's around the time the NextG network is busy in your area.
I have the same problem with my Network Gateway, I believe the newer Ultimate is even worse when there's congestion on the network. These wifi modems that Telstra/Bigpond use are absolute garbage, unfortunately we don't really have any options in our situation if we want coverage.
If you can get hold of one of the old toaster modems they are more reliable and will stay connected. The trade off with this though is they aren't wifi and they do not have the same d/load speed.
Thanks Brian and John, I did expect that that may be the reason, but wondered if it was something else.
Surly in this day and age one could expect constant coverage at any time of the day.
Leon

Hi Leon
If you think it is bad now wait till you see what it is like in 12 months.
I use a landline with ADSL2 and find that many sites that loaded in 2 seconds with dial up now take over a minute on ADSL2 at peak periods. At least when I get to the sites I need the download speed is normal.
With everyone dropping their land lines the use of wireless is becoming saturated. Wireless has a much more finite bandwidth compared to your "exclusive" landline and space has to be shared with the number of people on each serving point at a given time and the number of serving points is not increasing at the same rate as the users.
The much vaunted NBN network will not improve the internet for most unless they connect direct to the fibre. The use of wireless will still be the order of the day for those without direct connection and performance will depend on the number of users on the distribution point at any given time.
The biggest user of space of course is people streaming video and other high capacity data streams that hog the space and of course when the NBN comes the cable TV suppliers will want most of the fibre capacity to distribute their products so that they don't have the expense of satellites.

 Leon I just remembered something , late last year Telstra was so bad that I tried Vodafone, but that was no better.
I found out after that Telstra were intergrating the new 4g network into the existing 3g network and that caused all sorts of problems up here with drop outs and sluggesness very common..
Are they doing the same where you are at the moment Leon ? Look into that mayby? A thought ?
Brian.
Thanks Brian, I will check that out.

One other problem could well be the condition of the line into your house. I had problems with mine as the cable was old(ish) and the insulation had cracked allowing water/corrosion into it resulting in lots of drop outs caused by wind/rain/temperature etc. Might be worth getting a tech from telstra to replace the feed in line.
Cheers

Leon, I had the same problem with Big Pong after going across to them late last year. I am adsl2+ and in the afternoon and evenings I was getting dial up speeds. They came up with all sorts of excuses, but in the end it was obvious that they just did not have the bandwidth. I went back to my original provider and now getting regular 900kbps where I was lucky to get 125kbps with Big pong. Considering my current provider is out of the same exchange as Telstra, it says a lot about the state of their equipment, or lack of. Wont go back to them again. At least now when I ring my provider, I get someone who can speak fluent English and lives in Australia. Bollox to Big Pong....:mad2:
As we speak it is playing up again, night time of coarse, thanks for your input guys I will get on to it in the morning, it is just so frustrating.

I have ADSL2+ with another ISP and even tho I am a fair way from exchange I am on an Agile connection and I rarely see less than 1mbs
or 3x what optus cable delivered .
A change of ISP is in order I think

Kid o clock, we see it all the time, the rot usually sets in as the kids arrive home from school, it's worse in the holiday periods.
We do some troubleshooting for ISP's and the most commonly complained about problem is speed dropping around 4:30Pm onwards even on business grade services. Mobile broadband is even worse, there's limited spectrum bandwidth and it has to be shared.
Mark I,m sure your right mate , but we have to rely on wireless as we move around all the time.
Telstra dose provide pretty good coverage out in the sticks, most times, it is just as explained earlier, there are certain times it turns to snail pace.

Doh! silly me of course as every one else said goes double for wireless its a shared connection . If you were really keen there is always satellite I guess but prob more expensive.
