Can you load a Mac operating system on any computer? Just a curious debate question. If you have a non-apple computer without an operating system on it, could you load Mac operating software instead of a Microsoft based operating software and have it operate as a Mac?

Officially, no.
There are VM images running around that you can mount on a suitable Intel-based host, but they contravene licensing laws.
There are a plethora of very OSX-specific firmware enhancements and engineering features that define a real Macintosh, so why you'd want to run a "not quote right" installation on a raw PC I'm not sure.
Having said that, I'd love to have access to a stack of virtual Lion Server instances to run my applications on. As a web server, OSX and its built-in and tuned Apache/mySQL implementation excels.

Apple uses specific parts & some generic pc parts aren't compatible nor are drivers produced. There are somevthe have done it..for eg loading Mac s on an eeePc. With apple prices so low it's hardly worth the trouble

Its not exactly straight forward and usually involves some familiarity with Unix/Linux but its being done regularly and there are step by step guides
Not all hardware is compatible and not all features are possible because the iMacs do have some specific hardware.
Look up 'Hackintosh' and also 'Hack Mac', 'Mac Hack'

It's not all that hard. The tools around now make it fairly easy but don't expect everything to work. Depending on the machine you might have problems with the built in audio or wifi or ethernet but you can get external usb to replace them. As for the trouble? Well, what would you rather use - a lappy a couple of years old with Vista? or .....
But Dannat's right, looking at a new laptops, it'd be Mac.

Well - 10 years ago I played with a Mac for 1 hour.
Bought my first one on eBay 2 days later
Never ever looked back on having a PC.
I use windows at work because I HAVE TO, and as much as I can I do my work on the Mac and send it to work via email, dropbox and mobile me
I believe a 2nd hand one is a good starting point to figure out what you're in for with the OS X. You can always sell a Mac...;)
My 2cents
Cheers
