Hi guys

My son wants to set up a private Minecraft (online game) server for himself and a friend to play on.

I'm not concerned with the settings for the game, but do I need to do anything specific to allow external people to connect through the modem/router to the server?

It's a Billion 7800N (user manuals (http://au.billion.com/product/usermanual.php).

If I do an ipconfig /all, I think the IP address its showing is an internal one? (192.168.xx.xx).

Cheers

Mike, just go to http://www.whatsmyip.org/ to get your external ip. You may need to do some port forwarding in the router so external people can connect, but that is game dependent, you'd have to search for the info.

Your public address should be shown in the admin screen of your router.

You'll also need to make sure your son's computer's IP address is static (assign IP based on MAC address), otherwise the port forwarding stuff will fail to work if his internal LAN IP changes.

One thing to make this experience easier for your son, go to www.dyndns.org (http://www.dyndns.org) and sign up for a free dynamic domain name. You run a small app on your "server" that contacts DYNDNS servers and updates them with your IP address as it changes through the dynamics of ADSL. This way you dont have to go checking your router everytime you want to play your sons friends just type in a name like icemans-son.dyndns.org ;)

I have a number of free names through them and also a paid service for sarcasmogerdes.com (http://www.sarcasmogerdes.com) that points to a couple of webservers, an email server and a vpn service to allow remote access to the systems I run at home.

This is all done on a regular ADSL2+ service.

The other names i have are

rosecottage.dyn-o-saur.com
sarcasmogerdes.dyndns.org
rosecottage.webhop.org
+
mail.sarcasmogerdes.com
www.sarcasmogerdes.com (http://www.sarcasmogerdes.com)
barry.sarcasmogerdes.com

these all point to the same dynamic adsl address

Mike,

You can ask if your ISP does static addresses. Mine does, and it is one of the reasons I chose it.

Tell your router to always allocate the same IP to your son's computer - it will do that by MAC address. Then you add the port forwarding rules for the game's ports to his PC. If the game lets you change the ports it uses, you could alter them to something unusual so people port scanning are less likely fo find it.

And any time you open ports through your router you provide a potential for cracker access. Keep every computer's antivirus up to date.

basically visit portfoward.com.. and follow the prompts.

You wanna foward the ports so when the other guy connects he gets redirected to the gaem

also gooogle what is my ip, that is the IP the other guy connects to..
Alternativly both download and install hamachi.

This does not work if there is an http proxy in the path, either one your ISP tells you about, or a transparent proxy they do not tell you about.

Look up in the router status page for the external IP.

Mike:

You will be using the "Virtual Server" capabilities of your router. So, with this in mind, do the following...

1) Log into the router...
2) Go to the Port Mapping option of the router (Configuration/Port Mapping). This is on page 120 of the manual.
3) You will enter a name for the application ("MineCraft" will do)...
4) Set the protocol to TCP
5) The External Port Number is 25565
6) Set the Internal IP Address to your server (192.168.xx.xx)
7) Set Internal Port to 25565
8) Click "Add"

This will add a line into the router table that directs all access to port 25565 to the machine specified in the IP address...

In order to play, no DYNDNS or any other BS lame crap like that needs to be had... just figure out what the external IP adddress is via "Myipaddress.org" http://www.myipaddress.com/show-my-ip-address/ and e-mail that address to your friends... if you reboot the router, then you will need to re-send the IP address around again.

If you have a fixed IP, then you will not have to worry about any dynamic aspects....

OIC!

<LATE EDIT: Make sure your server accepts the port you specify... if you are in Windows, it will be under the Control Panale/Security/Firewall/Allowed Programs tab. Linux access varies by distro, so if you are using Linux, let me know which type and version...>

<Even Later Edit Based on other peoples postings....: If you want some security tips in relation to private servers, give me a shout... some people are correct in that port trolling can be a problem (I do it often)... and some crackers (not hackers) can get in, but to be honest, the number of people who ACTUALLY know how to do this is limited, as most are just "script kiddies" claiming to /b/L33t....>
