2" Filters

Hi everyone,

I would like to purchase some 2" filters......I dont have a clue on what brands or what colours to choose...can someone point me in the right direction......

Is their 2" kits that are worth buying and where from...Andrews have 2" filters for $29 each.....anyone got any?

I am viewing planets ATM but once educated will be looking more into DSO......thats when I will pull out my LPI or the New Toucam if Gary ever delivers it to me...lol...

Any Comments appreciated.

The most used filter I have is the Light Blue one (80A I think). Its good on Saturn and Jupiter to make the cloud bands more distinct.

I've just ordered some colour filters from Andrews, the 1.25" ones. 5 for $40. (#12, 21, 23A, 56, 80A)

From what I've heard and read, some colours can enhance some detail on some planets. For example, some colours are claimed to bring out the cloud bands on Jupiter more.

Others say that they see no difference with or without them and that they're a waste of money. I guess i'll find out when I receive them.

For DSO observing, you might want to look at a UHC or OIII filter - I started a thread a while back (http://www.iceinspace.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=292&highlight=OIII) which has a fair bit of info in it.. might answer your questions about those.

I am checking Andrews out ATM...I just dont know what to ask for......is their a standard pack or do they work of those numbers you have provided (eg...80A, 56)

I spose what I am asking is their a beginner pack in 2"...something to start with as I am sure their is many types of filter you can buy.

Get the same 5 colours I got.. they're apparently a good mix of the best colours.

Just use those #'s.

if Ice got 5 filter for $40 then my idea is a waste of time.
They are however 1.25", and you were after 2", so try this as well as pricing the "real" thing.
2" astro filters are actually 48mm, and this is an older but still available camera filter size. Whether the quality is good enough is up to you, but I reckon it will be. Try an older camer shop, the one with staff that remember filters. You may find a bargain or two, and even second hand ones will do.
I use an orange one in front of my bino viewer for lunar viewing.

I have lots of filters:P

Most times they stay in the case. They only come out when Mars is around, later this year.

The ones Mike got are a very good mix, and i would go that way if it was me :D

Forget 2" filters for deep Sky they cost to much and you wont use them much.
Buy another eyepiece instead:whistle:
