"A young man is in a coma after falling from a moving car while 'planking', just days after another man died partaking in the stunt."

Sam Newman was on Current Affair doing "planking" on some balcony of a high rise building. Even prime minister spoke about it on TV.

Why do people do this? Adrenaline rush? Want to be on news?

Because this kind of trash makes the major media outlets.

If it wasn't reported, no-one would be doing it.

Yep sure:

..........the Channel 9 chopper just happened to by flying by, 90 The River Esplanade in Docklands ( I know the location well as Sam has an apartment above ours) with a video crew, and very long lens.

...and shock horror !! Here was Sam, flat out on his balcony. What a scoop!

As P.T. Barnum (of Barnum and Bailey's Circus) was fond of saying: "no-one ever lost a dollar by underestimating the intelligence of the general public"

Barnum was also fond of saying "there is a sucker born every minute"

My cousin showed me a picture of him "planking" at his work last week. It's all the rage at the moment but wont last long as all these "viral" type lunacies tend to have short life spans before the next idiotic craze is picked up.

I understand Sam Newman had the TV crews there because he had earlier told a radio station or something he was going to do it. This was all before that first poor fellow died.

I'm not a fan of "planking", but from my point of view I see it as just a bit of fun. It's just people lying down in funny situations that you wouldn't expect. It's humour, not everyone's cup of tea, but it's humour. But the thing is it's like anything in life that people do, there is always going to be some idiot who takes it too far and ends up getting hurt, or in the extreme case we have seen, killed. But it doesn't mean everyone who does "planking" is going to do the same or are just as stupid.

Unfortunatley however it seems the media beatup has done it's job and people now seem to have this idea in their head that "planking" equals lying down in extremely dangerous situations period. Therefore anyone who does it is automatically judged an idiot. Charming. But that's the job of the media, highlight the extreme minority for the sake of a good story. And how fortudious that it originated from the Internet, because we all know nothing good ever comes from the Internet.

This is very tragic stuff for a these young fellas loved ones in regard to this lame arsed nonsence.

Though if Sam happened to take a tumble past my kitchen window one morning Pete, I coudn't help but feel pity for the concrete below having to put up with him up close and personal until the hoses had done there job .

It might have started as harmless fun, but add grog, drugs and a healthy dose of testosterone / adolescent bravado and the tragic results were inevitable.

People kill themselves in all sorts of innovative ways ( I am a big fan of the Darwin awards), and slowly but surely because of this, we are being bubble wrapped by the nanny state of Oz.

What ever happened to personal responsibility?

It is the low level of journalism that just helps the process along. Channel 9's coverage with the "shock & outrage" was truly pathetic.

Real risks are rarely looked at...so long as the tabloid headline get's 'em in :)

Planking I'm sure can be a bit of fun. Let's hope the bureaucrats don't put in the same bin as those "weapons of mass murder".....laser pointers.

This seems to be a harmless bit of silliness.
If yer daft enought to try "extreme" planking (I just made that up so...dibs!:) ), you'd probably be equally likely to die in some other stupid way.
Its cold, its wet, its dull - McJournalists like 'Today Tonight" are going to grasp anything they think will whip-up interest.

Darwin Awards 2011

"Man run over by train while planking between the lines"
"Women suffocates as bottom run in planking totem"

this pass time I suppose is no different than wheelie bin riding or
train surfing

or any other stupid jack ass idea the young can come up with for fun

once the media looses interest so will everyone else

That's a very heavy wave...even if it does form a tube lower down, you're going to get a big wall of water come over the top. Get caught under that and you'll be in big trouble.

OK, now you have all had a go at the planking craze, and to most it is harmless silliness of the younger generation, if performed safely.

Now to all you others who have dubbed this to be the stupidest, unsafest and ridiculous thing you have seen. :screwy:

"Fess up", what dangerous and stupid things did you do when you were young and no one was looking. :eyepop:

Well I rode untamed horses, through the bush, bareback when I was 12 years old, with my older brothers. Made cubby houses in the bush, got tied up inside, and my brothers torched it, :help: and then rescued me whilst playing Cowboys in the Bush. :eyepop:

Made canoes out of old sheets of Galvanized tin and paddled around the two dams we had and sunk many, and I could not even swim then.:eyepop:

Now you guys have a go. ;)

A good point Leon

All I can say..... too true.....
As a kid I did some stupid things, but never got on the tv for my antics!!!!
I'm sure when I was a kid, the stunts I would perform would have ended up deadly for some other kids.....:(I was lucky.....
These days with all the media ( and increased population ) the stunts are magnified by some order of magnitude, by digital distribution. So more people are aware of it, and the whole Moral drama gets magnified too.....
Bring in the media ( hunting for a good story) and it just escalates.

Dont mind the concept of Planking myself, as long as it is safe.
The first I heard of it was on JJJ radio(maybe a month ago), in an interview with a rugby player ( i believe it is The Wolfman - I'm not a rugby fan.....) . I believe ( I could be wrong seeing Snoopy was the first :) :) ) he was the one to start it all and got noterierty on JJJ.
The ball started rolling ( of the plank) then......hehhehehehe

There is nothing wrong with Planking......
It's the mates/friends who **** it up for the their mates, by not stopping them from hazardous situations/ egging them on .
There is no need for banning Planking........
Put those idiots/halfwits/dumb****s etc (who push their so called mates to the extremes) in jail:doh:..................

And for those who like to plank on a moving object.........USE A NAIL GUN TO HOLD U DOWN......you are a plank aren't you????????:screwy::rofl::screwy::s hrug::screwy::rofl::help::P

I got into the explosive things when i was a tacker :D even in to rockets (of the back yard variety not purchased with a little motor) riding my BMX as fast as i could over massive jumps just because i saw the older boys do it. Damn planking is sitting perfectly still.

I agree with Peter the Darwin awards needs something to fill its pages, so if they want to plank on moving cars, on 7th floor building and don't have the brains to go mmmm if I stuff up and fall i think i might be in a weee bit of strife! then yay for humanity!

we seem to be safe guarding our stupid people for some reason so we can increase the amount of stupid hanging around. A great movie to high light this is "Idiocracy" "Its got what plants crave, its got electrolytes"

here is the link so you can piss it laughing! Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy) give a special read to the first sentence of the first paragraph!
