Saw Battlefield Los Angeles last night. Don't expect big plot or story, but wow! If you like CONSTANT and frantic action, you are placed right in the thick of it with no boring bits. Worth a watch. 8/10

There's a plausibility problem that will prevent me from enjoying the movie - aliens wouldn't bother going to all that effort to knock us off - just use a bio-weapon instead.

In contrast District 9 didn't have any major plausibility hurdles and the multiple story lines and interesting lead character made it enjoyable for me. The best science fiction has something to say about humanity.

I don't mind a good action adventure movie.

From the trailors it looks a beauty.

is that a posittive or a negative? god or bad footage or never want to see an action film again?

bloodhound31

It's a positive. Combat is real, so if you are going to do a movie about it, then you should do it justice. This is well done. (They still can't resist a fireball from an M26 fragmenting grenade though )

It's a movie about alien shock-troopers full-scale global incursion. Does it need plausibility? This movie is all about action.

Perhaps these aliens have no knowledge of bio warfare where they come from..maybe they have never experienced disease...perhaps they would be vulnerable to it as well and need to occupy the planet for it's resources..who knows? Who cares? It's just a lot of fun and at the end of the day, it's just a movie.

District 9 had holes too, but I loved it. I try to focus on the positve aspects. If the movie is entertaining, I am prepared to overlook a few holes.

Skyline on the other hand..well...

What is with that? other than the fact it looks cool I suppose.
Being an ex Grunt my self I laugh everytime I see a 'movie' frag gernade go off.

Been wondering if this flick is worth a watch, might have to go for a looksy.

I'm not criticising other peoples tastes but I've developed a low tolerance for shallow hollywood churn; still I thought I should check what my favorite film critic, David Stratton, had to say (1 star): http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/arts/saving-the-world-does-not-save-this-movie/story-e6frg8n6-1226022032396

It makes movie watching less of a minefield if you can find a film critic you identify with. Still I don't mind the occasional shallow hollywood flick if it's bad enough to almost reach cult status - Starship Troopers was kinda fun, with a few whiskeys :) .

i, too, usually appreciate david stratton's reviews and have found:
- if he is reviewing "art house" movies I usually take note
- but lately (last year or so) for action/blockbuster movies I have started to heed them less.
i think he is, perhaps, getting jaded.

i turn to Rotten Tomatoes and still use IMDB, where anything over 7/10 is probably worth a look see.

I cannot stand the Movie Show, they just dribble so much ****
However, I usually check what rating David gives a movie tho, as he seems to rate them about the same as I would.

hah! I have the same for IMDb, 7/10 or more and it's worth going to see.
5 to 7 is wait for DVD.
<5 is just not worth my time.

I'm going against the norm here as I liked Skyline

aliens that like to eat our brains and use them to control thier cyborg machines

ships and machines that regenerate

main actors that get killed in the movie

humans don't really win

love conquers all

leave your brains at home stuff

Yeah, I'm not gonna bother.
Maybe when it's out for $1 weekly.... and I can't find anything else to watch.

Alas, didnt like this movie much - a bunch of marines running around shooting, shooting, running and shooting, yawn ...... jerky handheld camera, eek. Quite disappointing as had been really looking forward to it.

If you liked that movie, you should read the book it was based on, "Starship Troopers" by Robert A Heinlen.
Not a lot like the movie, but thought provoking. Only Citizen's can vote, hold public office or be a police officer. You can only be considered a Citizen if you have served in the armed forces. The reasoning is that unless you have been prepared to put your life on the line for your country and your people, how can you even hope to serve in any public capacity?

Hmmm!!

I did watch Battle: LA, I generally watch most science fiction movies, to have an opinion. I must say the plot was very shallow and apart from the endless action scenes, not much happenend, not much developing of the story. But as a big action popcorn movie, I enjoyed it.

I do not expect to see a profound mind blowing movie that forces me to think about deep concepts everytime I go to the movies, sometimes, a good visually interesting entretainment is very good to clear the mind, there is enough drama in real life.

Generally a pay attention to critics opinions, but usually they favour arthouse sometimes boring british movies, which I am not very in love with, so, they really don't influence me when I decide to watch a particular movie, critics generally don't rate well big productions, except por rare cases such as Inception last year.

He's deranged. Don't listen to him! :screwy::D
SSTs is brilliant. A true icon of S-F filmaking.
I loved it. I can just turn my brain off and enjoy!

Skyline? I liked 'Turk' and it must be said the whole undefeatable enemy thing was really quite creepy - I mean what WOULD you do against an enemy that was bent on whiping you out and even nukes didn't work against them?
Also the whole business of them poking their sneeky, commie-alien probes into my condo....Brrrrrr!
Give it another watch.

My combat experience is in the Navy where things happen at a gentleman's pace - until they don't - so I'm getting a little bored of all the fast cutaway stuff where "Sarge" rallies his boys amidst a fire-fight.
Having had an entire ship shot out from under my ***, I can tell you there's ****-all time for any rallying!

Yes, but it's not my fault - I watched a couple of really bad movies some years ago without medication - 'Twister' and 'Hard Rain' - I walked out on both of them before total neural shutdown occurred :) .
