please help with microsoft error code

Hi guys well I need some computer help again if some one could be so kind.

about 12 months ago I bought Microsoft Office and Student 2007 and installed it on my machine, it had been working perfectly until today.:sadeyes:

I just wanted to open Microsoft Word, and then it tells me it has an error 1317, wants to configure word, but it cant because it cant find the folder.:shrug:

Also says something to the effect, please check that the, actually it says this, hope some one can help, thanks. :)

Leon here is one possible fix, I googled the error message:

To resolve this problem, ensure that you have the necessary permissions on your hard disk or disks. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.


In Windows NT Explorer, select the folder.
Right-click the folder, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
On the Security tab, click Permissions.
Select the Everyone group, and then click Full Control in the Type of Access list.
Select the Replace Permissions on Subdirectories check box.
Click OK.
Click Yes to the prompt confirming whether you want to replace permissions on all subdirectories.
Click OK in the folder name Properties dialog box (where folder name is the name of the folder that you selected in step 1).
Run Office Setup.

Putting on my security hat, that really is ugly. It is better security policy to make it the Administrators group, and run the install as user who is a member of that group.

Everyone should have no more access than Read+Execute on system folders and program files.

Not that Windows and security have much to do with each other.

Removing those security controls is the first thing I do after installing Windows. It's my computer and I want access to everything even system files!

It's annoying when you spend half an hour installing something and you get the warning you need administarative priviledges to do something.

I don't think I have noticed that error code that Leon had but I have often had missing files with MS products (and others) after recovery from crashes. I just grab the discs and re-install.

Leon it may be that a folder may have been inadvertantly moved, it's easy to accidentally move a folder with Win7, might ne worth taking a browse through your directory tree and see if anything looks out of place.

Access does not automatically mean write/delete access to everything. You can have convenience or security. Pick one.



Convenience makes mistakes like that more likely. UAC at least asks "are you sure?".

Who runs their *nix system always logged on as root?

Ever done "rm -rf /*" when you really meant "rm -rf *" ?

I know of someone who did "chmod -R -x /*" on a live production system. Good thing they had a current mksysb and data backups.

I don't worry too much about linux. As long as I have set my root password so I can use it. I log onto root when I need to work in the usr folders.

In windows convenience is most important. I work on the principal that anything on your computer that is going to harm you if accessed should not be there. Security only keeps honest people out.

I have my computer fully backed up in a number of places and can re-load if anything goes wrong. I was brought up on DOS and Machine code

Well guys I have read your posts but am no wiser, could you pleas tell me in English of what to do, ya know open this click here, that sort of stuff. :help:

I have actually tried to remove Office Home and Student, but it wont let me do that either, totally buggered here. :shrug:

It tells me... Error 1317 Setup Cannot create Folder

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data
verify that the path exists in your system and that you have sufficient permission to update it.

The point here is I didn't want to update in the first place, it just started to be a pain in the arse when i next tried to open Microsoft Word. :sadeyes:

So if anyone can help I would really appreciate it. :)

By the way to those that have asked about the Wallpaper, I have had it for a while and if i can recollect it came from one of the members here.

Anyway here it is if you want to use it for a Wallpaper, I'm sure the original producer of the image wont mind. :question:

Hi Leon

A question? Was that software pre-installed on the computer or did you install it later from disks. Some computers came with a trial version of office installed that was free to use for 30 days. After which time you had to pay for it and get your registration. I had this on my computer but was able to remove it by normal process as I had my own Office 2000 to install.

If it was pre-installed and you have had a computer crash. The system would need to have been reinstalled from the inbuilt recovery program. If you have repaired the computer in any other way. eg your own copy of Windows XP and tried to run office from an existing installation you probably won't have any success unless you re-install office. In which case the user data would have been in documents and settings\your name\...........\data. Not "all users"

When I checked that error it seems that it is associated with permissions and you will in fact need to give yourself the required permission to make the changes according to information in previous posts

Hi Leon

It sounds like a difficult one to solve without having access to the computer are you travelling again soon and able to take it to one of the smart computer guru's from here on your travels I think it will be very hard to solve remotely unless someone can take control of your computer remotely I don't have the required internet speed to allow me to do it remotely.

Thanks guys for your efforts and response, the installation of Office was a bought one from Office Works, it installed some 12 months ago perfectly but now has decided it dose not know who the owner is.

I will fiddle some more, and if not successful will get some help from a friend who knows more than me.
