the wheel tracks of my 4x4 where like mini streams.
All the drying out of the ground over the last three days as gone out the window:mad2:

The storm here was pretty pathetic yesterday afternoon but this morning it is still looking grey and overcast :( Hope this weather clears up by the end of the week and that the field dries out for you Ron, it will be the last time I'm able to use my friend's scope before she goes back to Canberra and then, no scope for me :(

Gorgeous clear sunshine here atm, after a feral overcast night, but satpic already shows high cloud roaring in from the west at superluminal velocities. Let's hope it erodes like a urinal cake as it hits the Vic border.

high cloud, low cloud, flooding torrential rain.... all the same thing :(

Finished up with 79mm for the 24 hours till 09:00 this morning:help:
That 71mm is the most rain in one hour since I have been doing the weather in over three years :eyepop:

Just had another two inches here Ron.

Our phones are not working properly.

Some road damage.

The local saw mill suppose to start work again after a Xmas holiday.

But may not be going for long,as when the logs run out, there will be no more

coming in,as the trucks and cutters cannot get them out of forestry, due to

wet.:(

Really starting to affect people's lives.

Gee, stay safe guys.

We're just getting the southern tail end of today's falls. I see inland of N Coast is still getting hammered today.

WOW!

And we are still having our driest spell on record. Hope everything is ok for everyone affected over there.

Kilcoy creek has well and truly broken it banks.
Still having torrential rain.
Reckon that the low lying properties in town are in danger. I know that the house below me, their yards and arena are underwater.
Even during the time I'm writing this, I can see a rise in the water in the paddocks on the other side of Kilcoy creek.
We still have the flood waters from the Conondales to reach us yet.

It's gone from a bit of a diversion to something quite serious.

CometGuy
09-01-2011, 05:29 PM
Look after yourselves guys, might get quite serious. Another 100mm or so has fallen in the catchments since 9am this morning. Wonder how much more flood capacity Somerset and Wivenhoe dams have?

Found this footage of Wivenhoe Dam from yesterday (not mine) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GNfhyi94VU

G'day, I have got 230mm in the gauge, that has been collecting for the last 12-14 days. This is unreal, I belief all dams are at capacity, Wivenhoe is releasing a 100 Megalitres a day and probably going up to 130 Megalitres a day. And the news is that we are not done with the wet weather for some time yet. It will be a while before I am going on a Kayak fishing trip :(.
I hope no one is affected severely by this weather pattern, and every one is safe from major damage.

Regards, Dutch

Remarkable series of images you have in this thread now Ron. It doesn't sound too good for Gympie and Maryborough if you're getting those sorts of falls in the Mary catchment :(

I was wondering about Kilcoy - glad to hear you're ok, if worried, JJJ

Good thing they put the emergency flood overflow works into Wivenhoe. In '74 it rained steadily through January until the cyclonic lows came in and did the real damage Australia day weekend....
Let's hope we get none of that this year.

Its fascinating how many floods they had in the late 19th century version what we've had in the last 50yrs.
http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/qld/fld_history/brisbane_history.shtml

I believe the terrible 1893 floods were primarily in the Bremer basin, so Wivenhoe wouldn't necessarily protect Brissy if the right (wrong) conditions came along again.

I live on an island now.
The water is rising in the low lying areas of town.
The unfloodable bridge is flooded.
Cattle are running out of room.
The Memorial Hall in town is hosting those who couldn't get room in the motels in town.
They're sandbagging the BP.
And the torrential rain hasn't eased one iota all afternoon. Over 4 inches since 9am according to BOM, but talking to locals just up the road from me, they've had 180mm today.
It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Jingos, what is wrong with your place, I thought we were the ones with green grass, and rain. Lately it has been quite dry though.

:)Hi jjjpeg, Hi Astroron,:)

Crikey, I have driven over those spots a few times (when dry)
I imagined just how bad it may be when we have conditions such as now.

Half a metre over the floodway is a lot of water. To make it a full metre is incredible. It is not just double the water quantity it is much more than that.
its spread may be 10 times to raise that extra 500mm.

We are heading for a drought. Not next year or the year after. It will come. Makes you think. The water is here now. We have a challenge.

Astroron, please do not drown before I meet you.
jjjpeg, hang in there. You have at least 3 more weeks and it will finally subside.
When the astronomical withdrawal symtoms kick in just go to the Hubble website photo gallery.
This weather system will not be forever.

Its raining its pouring
Of Course__
Its Global Warming

JJJ and AstroRon,

Having seen your pictures and heard your stories I think I might stop complaining about my pool overflowing!!

Keep safe,
Mario

PS I've stopped trying to keep records of rainfall - every time the rain gauge fills up my sons race out and empty it before I can get a reading!!

looks like those around the nambour area have endured over 300mm rain in the past 24h - 175mm falling in the last 24h

Wow stay safe guys the radar is showing a nasty looking day ahead.

This weather is very sureal , my aunt woke up boxing day out in the lockyer valley to the sound of a ski boat ( she aint near a river).
Her neibour down the road had launched it at there house and were shooting snakes ( 36 )from the boat as every one of them was heading straight for the small bit of dry ground surrounding there home .

Just spoke with Ponders - he has had over 200mm rainfall in last 24h, he is flooded in and has no power - he is into the icecream and steaks before they go off! ;) That new mount he has is a rain magnet

We have had over 160mm rain over 24hours, but the water has gone down quite a bit:D
the photo of the sign post shows how high the water got at its peak which was about midnight.
The picture of me shows what a well dressed "Water Reporter":lol:
wears to bring you the news:P:lol:

So, Ron, why do you think there was such a large discrepancy between your glass and electronic rain gauges? I was thinking of purchasing a weather station and want to know which brands are reliable at or below a price point of about $500. Any advice?

Richard.

We had 8 inches of rain here yesterday, the Blackbutt Range (D'Agulair Hwy)

is closed due to mud slides, and I have been told may be for a few days.We lost power, just so much rain,it ran into everything.

Taromeo Creek is roaring (see image),lots of furniture/bedding and matresses floating past. The local saw mill has had the front fence ripped away by raging waters,I never thought living 430 m above sea level,on a mountain range, would be an issue as far as flooding waters go!

Yesterday's 8 inches was a record.

I do hope we see some sun soon.

Cheers Chris
