Using an ASUS laptop when I plug in a serial > USB adapter I cannot find
the coms number. In device manager I find BT 10 thru 14, 20 thru 22 and 6&7
allocated to some Toshiba thing. If I uninstall each of these in turn until all
gone I then get usable numbers for my Pacific adapters, ie 6 and 10, BUT
each time I reboot the computer I find that the coms ports have again been
reallocated . How can I permanently uninstall these things - help please
Gerald.

Gerald, what I have found to work is manually setting the com port to your device in device manager. What I do is plug the item in, open device manager and find it. If you then right click on the icon and select properties you can assign a com port to it. Windows will kick up a fuss but just ignor it and tell it to go away. The next time you re boot windows assigns the com port you chose to your device and installs the other device on a different com port. I have shifted all mine from 1 - 8 so these ports only work with what I want and prevents hassles with drivers that only offer lower numbered ports as an option. There is another way to change them in the registry but I found this unnecessary as this way has worked well for me.

Cheers
