Somebody must have gone out and bought a real big badass telescope, and let out all that cloud forming Juju that seeps out of the box.

From Victoria - "Blue skies, smiling at me. Nothin' but blue skies, do I see." :P

Forecast for Sat night is incredible - even the jetstream is taking a holiday!

Stu, there was one more or less clear night in Sydney this week. It would have been OK if it hadn't had 100 deg of wind chill.

Blue skies over the city, but once you get to the upper yarra valley, where I live........ Clouds above

Edit clouds have now cleared, obs open and cooooooooling. Time for some imaging at last.

Seeing is pretty average, guidestar jumping all over the place, 2 x 20 min subs rejected as a result.... Going out to 2 sec guiding hopefully average out the movement.

Still at least it's clear.

Still jumpy, don't think any frames will be worthwhile, will give up at midnight if no improvement.

Pmrid has a new titan mount with a C14 on top. It's been overcast up here ever since it was polar aligned :mad2:

My son tells me it was absolutely clear as a bell here all night, but I fell asleep when I got home from work, woke for tea, fell asleep again, then woke at about 11:30pm.

Still clear but I'm waayyy too tired to set up now.

Typical. Months of rubbish and the 1st perfect night and I'm too tired :bashcomp:

Just packed up here. Seeing was shocking, stars looked soft even at 166x when I'd get sharp points at double that mag in good seeing. 7timer was on the money with the seeing this time. Never mind, it was good to get some clear skies! Ready to do it again 2moro :D

Was a good nights viewing considering what we have had recently.:D
Nice look at Orion, Tarantula, Neptune, youranus, and of-course Jupiter, and a few clusters in the west.
Bad luck again Ken.:P
Yes PGC "Ready to do it again 2moro" if I get the chance.

Glad it wasn't only me who thought the seeing was poor, but after all the cloud one had to try. I gave up just before midnight, it did look as if it improved slightly, but as all my frames were duds I gave it away.

Hopefully tonight.

Bought an Argo for the 12" and haven't even fired it up yet. Constant cloud, storms and rain ever since. :windy:

Yes I think Peter is going to have to sacrifice at least a mount AND a scope to the astronomy weather gods over this one.

You're right Stu, the weather in the Gong is a crock full. Cloudy one day, overcast the next. People just don't know how bad we have it! :tasdevil: Oh to live in beautiful sunny Victoria, especially that paradise of perfect seeing that is Melbourne.

:poke: :poke: :poke:

Look out Stu ... incoming

Don't know about Melbourne but down on the south west coast its been a perfect day, the first since I can remember. All set up for tonight, it's been so long that I had to get the manual out to set up the mount, also have instructions ready for drift aligning. Timely as I am trying to organise a portable setup to go to Snake Valley in Nov. I seem to have stuff everywhere.

Neale.

I'm over this weather, I think I'll take a trip to sunny Melbourne.
Aside from 30mts on Thursday that the clouds allowed me, it's been three solid weeks of cloud and rain. Missing the opposition of Jupiter was the finally straw.:sad:

The kids (young adults) all in bed for a while now, the wife gone to bed as the champagne and pastizzi are all gone and I'm ready for some action. So it's on with a second pair of jeans and a warm jacket (shouldn't everything be coming of:question:) and get back to the stars while I've got the chance.:D:D:D

May I suggest you come and join us on the other side of the Nullabor! We've had virtually no rain last summer until May. Then winter arrived(which is supposed to be our wet season) and we've had only 40% or our avg rain and I have had a ball learning astro photography since joining IIS.

I think I've had only about a handful of cloudy nights from memory since July which is very unusual for South Western Australia.

Anyway, we might cop it late spring:rain: just as we are supposed to start our dry season again now that I have gloated :P.

just wish I had more time off to take advantage of these lovely nights and learn more but work calls

Cheers,
Darrin...

Snake Valley, I'm jealous. Whilst I have been enjoying the viewing at home with all these clear nights, the light pollution is a pain. Hope I can make it to the dark skies at the next SV camp.

Just got in after an all nighter, which was over in what seemed like 5 seconds...

Seeing was shocking, probably even worse than yesterday, transparency was pretty ordinary, and my silly billy neighbours had their personal sun blazing all night.......but finally some clear skies, and 2 in a row at that

Was plowing my way through a galaxy cluster in Dorado... when I started it was dark, then about halfway through the moon was nearly 10 degrees above the horizon! It felt like 15 minutes of obs to me, but turns out it was over an hour!

Interesting to hear about your primary dewing up Eric, so far mine never has, even when the rest of the scope is dripping sodding wet.

Work starts at 3pm so I could take advantage of this night :D

Yes, a bit annoying - I'll have to work out why. There were two dry patches - where the surface fans were blowing- but only for about 1-2 cm from the edge.

erick
03-10-2010, 05:28 AM
Thermometers said mirror 5.6 deg, ambient 5 deg and humidity off the scale at "Hi". I think the ambient actually rose and the mirror was colder than the air. Another outdoor thermometer had gone from 5 deg back to 7 deg.
