Well embarrassingly enough I received three prizes... :eyepop: I couldn't believe it!
I have no idea if I won either of the two categories I entered or just got honorable mentions, but either way I'm ecstatic! The pinnacle of my astrophotgraphy career so far! :) (I was actually unaware of the competition until this year!). Two were for the Moonlit Landscape theme and one for the widefield section.
I'm not too sure if I can/should post my winning entries yet however, or whether it has to be formally announced first via CWAS, but I can certainly post them here when I have the all clear. I'll email them tomorrow and find out!
Just gotta get to Parkes now to the dinner to receive the prizes! A long (but well worth it) drive coming up me thinks....

I received an email advising of 2 gong's, which I'm very excited about. I almost didn't enter anything, and only uploaded a few pics 2 days before the entries closed.
I'm pretty sure they're only Honourable Mentions though, given the quality of shots posted by Mr Ward!
I'm going to try and get out to Parkes again this year. I went in 2007 and it was great. Would love to catch up with some familiar faces again, and Anthony is giving a talk too!
Congrats to you Wayne!

Got one myself also, :)
Wasn`t really expecting any this year as didn`t have much to offer with everything in storage for 8 months but at the last moment like Mike I put the few I had managed!
I would be very happy it get a honorable mention!
Good going Peter, Wayne and Mike!

Good going everyone! ... especially those with multiple gongs!!!

Well done Wayne. It is a very long drive up. It took us a day and a half to get there from Adelaide. Wayne you can post now as the competition has been decided.
I am considering flying but am expecting a HM and nothing more. I entered several sections this year in DSO and Planetary narrow field but only was recognized for one entrant. This image (http://paulhaese.net/SaturnsringTransit.html)I thought would surely get some recognition and the same for this one (http://paulhaese.net/ThorsHelmetHaRGB.html), but alas did not. I am certain that Anthony Wesley has won the narrow field solary system section that I entered. Yes I am a hypocrite but was talked into it by Mikey. Thanks BiG Sid. ;)
Here is my entry. It is reduced in size from 1500 x 1250 pixels.
Best of luck to all that entered and congrats to all the winners.

Did Anthony enter anything in the narrowfield solar system?
These were my 2 entries - 1 widefield and 1 moonlit landscape.
Congrats to the winners!
Gary, you're a serial winner! I'm sure you'll pick up another 1st ;)

Mike I just got off the phone with Anthony and he tells me he entered three images in the narrow field, one of last years impact, one of this years impact and one he thought would win but did not get asked to supply full size copies. Two images got asked for full size ones. I am sure he will display his images here. With the impacts I would think he has got up for sure. Mine is a pretty picture but not in the order of magnitude. However, as I have come to learn, the criteria for selection is often not explainable.
Gary I love that wide field. You have captured so many excellent objects in that image. If you are a serial winner I am surely a serial HM winner.

Thanks everyone and congrats to the other winners! Here are my three winning entries. As Paul said with his entries I thought 1 or 2 others that I entered would have been judged as a little better than a couple that got up. But it's David Malin's tastes and thoughts which is all that matters. And to be judged to be a winner by a peer like that is fantastic!
I, like a few of you, almost left it too late and only got them in the day before it closed. I'm glad I did now! One thing that I do notice is that they look much different when printed compared to any computer screen. That's why I always print them off first before I submit to any competition....
It's 'only' 1000km to Parkes Paul! haha. Will knock that off in a day anyhow. I used to drive back and forth to Canberra from Adel when I was working there and its about the same. Maybe we could car pool? :)

Mike I like the obs and Moon with Pleiades shot.
Peter, I love the red planet shot. Seems like lots of people entered the themed section this year. Like you I am not sure what is happening with DSO images. I wonder who won the DSO section and who got HM's because there are quite a few regulars that did not get up from my count.
The level of entries seems a lot higher than the previous years though. That is positive for Australian astrophotography.

Mike,
Peter's incredible Uluru 360-degree panorama deserved to win. That's one of the best images I've ever seen. : ) I'm not bitter at all; you can only do what you can and hope that what you present will capture the imagination of the judge. Will try harder next time. : )
Eddie, your recent multi-hour massive mosaics are nothing short of astounding. I'm assuming that you entered one of them? I'm surprised you didn't get anything. I wonder if Jase entered his Eta Carinae mosaic in...

Yes I reckon Phil would have bagged one or two ex if he submitted his Rho-Ophiuchus widefield! That`s one nice widefield!
Congrats to all.
I dropped a late mosaic bomb on the DMA's this year. All five entries were mosaics.
I did enter that one H - shown here (http://cosmicphotos.com/gallery/image.php?fld_image_id=210&fld_album_id=9)...but it was not good enough.
Also, the small Sagittarius star cloud, shown here (http://cosmicphotos.com/gallery/image.php?fld_image_id=186&fld_album_id=9) - but it was not good enough. Strange, that I was almost thinking of cheating with the Sagittarius image and entering it into the wide field category, alas I'm honest given it was taken with a telescope. I also entered MW9 shown here (http://cosmicphotos.com/gallery/image.php?fld_image_id=179&fld_album_id=9) (tough target) and Orion's Belt shown here (http://cosmicphotos.com/gallery/image.php?fld_image_id=175&fld_album_id=9), both of which were also not good enough to make the cut.
Unfortunately, resolution restrictions apply for the comp which severely hinder the glory of mosaics. They need to be shown at much larger resolution to do them justice. The small Sagittarius star cloud and Eta mosaic reduced down to the 2000 pixel entry limit almost look like postage stamps showing absolutely no detail. Sure I could crop certain areas, but you'd lose the impact and we're talking massive images here. Upon reflection its no wonder they didn't have a chance - cant see the forest for the trees...
So my only DMA nomination of the bunch was the infamous Rho Ophiuchus Nebulae Complex mosaic shown here (http://cosmicphotos.com/gallery/image.php?fld_image_id=181&fld_album_id=9). So we'll see what happens on the day. I'll make the effort to head to the awards this year so will catch up with a few new faces and usual suspects I hope.
PS. Eddie - Whilst your work on the 16" RC at MRO are killer images and very worthy of recognition, don't you remember this thread (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=33655)? ;)
Cheers

Yep that is a cracker of a shot Jase. So at least we know of one person in the DSO category that got something. I wonder who else????
I know of another award in the wide field category for a comet shot but he does not want to be named. He is currently headed for the eclipse on a cruise. It is a lovely shot he submitted and I would be thrilled if he won the category.

Hi Peter
Ah well...As I've said before, I don't take images for contests. It's purely for self-interest :)
But, man your winning images are something else. I'm not sure they should be strictly classified as astronomy photos. Like many if not all (that I've seen) in the moonlit landscape category, they're generally beautiful images.
Well done!

Thanks Simon. I was going to enter the full frame but I like the crop better because of the balance, colour and the fact that it draws attention to the juxtaposition of near & far. Besides, most of the interesting astronomy is in this area.
Thanks Eddie - and sorry you missed out! I'm in Grose Vale, about 60km NW of Sydney. The skies are reasonably dark, except to the E and SE of course. The seeing has it's moments but you have to have some luck on your side :)

Yeah congrats to all entrants. Eddie those three shots you've posted are mind blowing. The Malin's standard must now be extremely high for not being given even any mention. To my eye that's as good as it gets for an amateur... hell, even some pros don't do that. Bit puzzling really.

Hi Marc,
Thanks! I'm sure David had his reasons for not choosing them. My guess is that he decided others were better! :)
All the best!
strongmanmike
02-07-2010, 03:22 PM
Arhem...err..I think a number of other people may have felt they had entered images of sufficient calibre too ya know ...Not sure it would have been that David thought that all the awarded images were always "better" in any specific quantitaive way but rather I am sure in many cases something about them just appealed to him a little more or intregued him etc. David has clear bias (in a good way) too, certain objects continually get awarded year in year out, for example...a Corona Australis image has received an award in 4 of the last 5 years and an image of jupiter consisting of several globes in a row showing a moon transit has been awarded every year.
There must be a truck load of great images that just didn't make it for one reason or another, that's just how it works

Sure Mike. I never suggested otherwise. Was simply responding to Marc's comment about my images, noone elses..

Absolutely. An unprecedented number of entries this year, apparently.

Whatever do you mean Mike? :P Ah yes but not always enough to win that category. ;) Says me the serial HM winner. :)
Still getting a HM is no mean feat given the spread of the images submitted and this is a what David likes competition (took me a while to come to grips with this concept :confused2:). Working out what he likes is as hard as working out how to do the imaging in the first place I reckon. :)

I feel for you guys that have never won anything. It seems wrong, but like I said this is a what David likes competition. :) Like I said deciphering what he likes is really what the competition is really about and nothing more than that!
strongmanmike
05-07-2010, 03:30 PM
Not really that hard .... he likes trees in images, Corona Australis, jetties out in the water with something interesting in the sky above and a line of Jupiter images, so do a good version of each of these and you are home

Well, I agree that David's judging criteria may be a little opaque, and probably even subjective. But this comp is called the David Malin awards!! If someone with his vast experience deems an image good, then so be it!
David has said himself he likes images that are "striking". That means colour, detail and composition. EASY!!. As for my image, a Corona Australis has never taken line honours, so the challenge is to make one good enough to accomplish that. (And BTW, I'll be perfectly satisfied with an HM!!!)
Since there seems to be an undertow of criticism of David's choices, let me ask a question to all. If you were judging an astro image, what criteria would you use?
Cheers, Marcus
Octane

Just for clarification, I'm not criticising David's choices, Marc. :)
H
Paul Haese
05-07-2010, 05:21 PM
How rude of us to criticise.
Like you said to me Mike and I place give this advice to others. Don't take it all too seriously. Just because you win or do not win does not mean you are worse or better. David has his likes and they do seem to have a different flavour and as Marcus has stated and I think I said too, this is the David Malin Awards. It is what he likes and nothing more. By all means put trees in your image, or line up your Jupiter's (don't use Saturn as this never gets up) in a fancy way. ;)
Don't worry too much about if you did not get a nod, you all should know your images are far more impressive than five years ago and one should not need a competition to tell yourselves so. The quality of images has leapt in recent years and I put this down to the critque one gets by submitting things on the internet.
Anyway, I hope you all know what I mean.

Seriously, I again whole heartedly congratulate all who have been able to attract the eye of the Worlds most famous astrophotographer this year, very well done (yes, even you Corona Australis professionals) and I am truly very happy for you, I know it is very exciting
