Hate spyware, why do these people do this stuff. Why don't they attack the big corporations instead of us. I would love to send something back to these people sometimes. A virus that completely destroys their hard drive, so it can't be reformated. I know it does not exist, but feel that way sometimes. Thanks for the Heads up exfso.

It does exist, though I can't remember it's name. The virus over writes the boot sector continuously until the HDD is stuffed.

Hope no-one else gets hit with the stuff that got on my PC , impossible to get rid of , had to reformat the hard drive etc.....frustrating . It goes under the name of search extender/shopping wizard, hijacks your browser and slows everything down.

There are two programs that could help:

Easy to use: Ad-Aware (by Lavasoft, free)

Harder to use but much more powerful: Hijack This (also free) - had a lot of success with this.

Hi Guys, Just wondering what browser + email everyone uses. Tried Mozilla Firefox browser and Thunderbird email? Both free.
Works fine and bug free. :2thumbs:

Well no problems with spyware/ viruses here. I am using firefox for browsing, mutt for email and kstars for finding where point the little reflector.
To paraphrase the blues brothers, I use both operating systems, linux and freebsd :)

I work as a computer tech so here goes.

1. Use Firefox (or any thing else but internet exploder)
2. The Ms tool is still in beta, if you don't mind the crashes try it (I use it here and at work)

3. The other tool is ad-aware and spybot search and destroy - between these you will get enough of a scan to kill all but the hardest
4. ONLY USE hi-jack this if you want to screw your system up or are having large problems removing a browser hi-jacker (as the name suggests, it only cures hi-jacks)
5. If you want Anti-virus get trend Micro's PC cillin - it's the best suit out atm.

6. If you live in Kalgoorlie and want any computer work done, contact me and bring me a crate of beer and I'll help you out.

ad-aware and spybot are essentials these days... would go on the net without them.

I am new to XP tho. how good is the windows firewall... where are its downfalls?

Ving, Don't rely on windows F/W. Download and install *SYGATE* personal F/W from here,

This is version 5.5 build 2710 and is the most stable and bug free.
Disable windows F/W when you get Sygate. You don't need 2. May cause conflicts.

Ditch your PCs and get a Mac! I would if I could afford one. Meanwhile I'm pretty happy with Linux and loads of free software on a cheap AMD box. No spies, no viruses, no problems. It just keeps ticking along and lets me get on with it. Those new mini-macs look tempting though...

With NAV, ZoneAlarm, Lavasoft's Adaware (and now Firefox as my browser) I've never had a problem.

A Mac user found a magic lamp with a Genie in it. The Genie said he wasn't as powerfull as other Genies and could only grant one wish. So the Mac User brought out a map of the Middle-East and asked the Genie if he could bring peace to the people there. The Genie said "Ah, you see, its hard to do that. Those people have been fighting for years. Its a religion thing, and about territory. Why as soon as they are teenagers, they go to war. Pick something else." So the Mac User said, "Ok, make MacOS 8.0 a pre-emptive multitasking system, that is crash-proof and stable, has support for multiple processors, and still has 100% compatibility with all the current MacOS apps." Whatever you're talking about Vermin, it's gone over my head. WMDs? MacOS 8.0? Isn't that very old? MacOS X is supposed to be the best for all ? ; the pro and the casual user...? I get the impression that it's very solid UNIX (BSD) under the hood for grunt and stability, and shiny point and click front end for the average user... I still can't get over the one button mouse though. I've never owned a Mac myself, but I've used other people's. I'm fairly comfortable with Linux & Unix, and MacOS X seems to have all the UNIX goodies in a friendly package. I find black-box Windows very limiting, even with the inconvenience of the rest of the world running it and assuming everyone else does the same.

Yeah, I had a line-drop OSX-2 type 3 when I used the LINUX 7 and the P3-145 over dangler.

Anyway, I use Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-aware SE, AVG, and Firebird Guardian all at the same time and my computer is still stuffed.

The freezing problem every half hour or so is still happening (very fed up re-starting the computer each time). Got a Techo coming to pick it up and fix it in a few days. He is gonna lend me a PC while he fixes mine.

I hope it will work better when I get it back.
