Jen

 I have just realised that giving up the ciggies and imaging do not go well together :screwy: The skies are sooo beautiful tonight so out i was all ready to take the next step i cant get the polar alignment right :( All my notes that i wrote down from Snake Valley Camp are in the shed  I wont go in there as there is too many spiders in there :confused2: and i wont turn the light on :lol: All my pics look like star trails grrrrrrrrr :mad2::help:

I am usually a very patient person but dam my patience is running out already :help: So do i brave it and go in the shed and get my notes or race down to safeways and get a packet of smokes or just give up and try again tomorrow night or my very first thought was to throw the scope over the fence into the river :lol:

How do you imagers out there get through a bad night

Jen spiders dont harm you but cigarettes do, so dont think about the spiders and get your notes and just tuff it out.

Gaud Jen, smokes are a critical tool in the Astrophograhy experience, a calming, focusing tool. Get yr ass down to safeways and get some. Sheesh, whats more important, a great pic or a long boring life of inspiration-free hohum :poke::D.

Go get your notes Jen, it's probably too cold now for the spiders to move quickly. ;)

Orange juice and deep breaths will also help with the anxiety caused by giving up the ciggies.

I gave up too Jen so don't listen to Bassnut:P you can do it as to the imaging the pics will be much better without all that smoke wafting infront of the scope:rofl::P. I smoked about 80 smokes a day for over 10 years and haven't touched a smoke for about 12 years now one tip I can give you for giving up is your brain tries to trick you into having that smoke by making you have dreams that you had started smoking again when you wake up it seems very real and you feel like a loser but if you keep your head clear you soon realise it was a dream and you have stayed strong the better you do the harder your brain tries to fool you.

Stay off the bungers Jen. Your health is far more important to you, your family and most importantly your friends on IIS . In time think of how much money you have saved and think about how many astro goodies can be invested in as a result.

To Warren - well done mate that is an awesome effort and I bet you feel so much better for it. I know I did when I lost the 50kgs of excess weight I carried for years and years but was too lazy to do anything about.

Thanks Wayne

Those patches were the secret could not have done it with out them my wallet is much better after giving up between my wife and I we were spending about $350 a fortnight for coffin nails. Needless to say we now own a reliable car have no debts and our lungs are much healthier. I did put on weight after giving up I know I turned orange as I replaced the hand to mouth of smoking with eating carrots improved my vision a lot:rofl:. But I lost 60KG in 6 months so I know how you felt after losing the weight I have since had more problems with being unable to ride a normal push bike but I am building a sit bike so I can get back to my 60KLM per day bike ride to get the weight under control.

Jen,

1. Get some patches - they work a treat!! Don't go the nicotine chewie - I hurt my jaw trying to get the last bit of nicotine out of the buggers!

2. Go down the shed and get your notes. Take a thong with you and if a spider should appear - WHAM!!!

3. Enjoy a peaceful night under the stars. You'll be amazed at how quickly the time passes....

4. Keep up the good work keeping off the ciggies!

Cheers,
Mario

I guess it comes down to how soon YOU want to be up there amongst the stars or be down here taking beautiful images and using them as travel brochures to show friends who continue to smoke.

Don't give up Jen, quitting is hard but one of the best things you can do for yourself. The way I see it your health is the second most important thing in life besides your family, so keep at it! Well done on taking the first step.:)

Hi Jen, :)
Do I detect Emoticadiction?

Seriously though, when you feel that burning desire or weakening for that aromatic smoke of a CANCER STICK. When the desire to resist is slowly extinguishing and you want to light up............:eyepop::help::mad2:: sadeyes:
................ Cast your thoughts to the wise words of
Warren, Wayne, PeterM, Wade, Ron, Mario, Ric, Martin, Fred, NO Forget Fred :P and Humayun.
They are all there for support in your assumed lonely battle against tobacco blight.

Anyway I have said it before, "Giving up smoking is easy, done it lots of times":P :thumbsup:

I agree, the gum is no good... too hard to keep lit!!... Patches are easier, but you've gotta roll them right or else they'll rip the skin off your lips....:lol::rofl:

Jen... If it helps, i keep several spiders, reptiles and other creepy crawlies as pets, and i can tell you that most spiders are currently in semi-hybernation due to the cold... So just be quiet and try not to wake em up and you'll be fine!!!:lol::thumbsup:

Jen,

The patches are cheap compared to what the ciggies will cost in the long run!
Stay strong!!!

Get someone else to get your notes from the shed for you...
Bribe them with some of that chocolate.:D

Well Jen
The area inwhich I work, I see the results from smoking from day to day.
People with their toes amputated, coughing and choking after an anaesthetic, short of breath after the simplest activity not to mention the co-morbidities like heart disease and Cancers.
There is light at the end of the tunnel though. If you smoke say a packet every two days the cost per week will be between $30 to $50. Now over a year you are looking at a saving of $2500 to $3000. Imagine the scope you can buy with that sort of money.
Good luck Jen a chuppa chup may help the "something in the mouth issue"
Regards Paul.

What if, you pretend to buy ciggies but you hide the money somewhere where noone can find it than there would be noone to ask any quistions on why you are spending thousands a year on scopes!

Try weaning yourself off the ciggies by say one per day or couple per week. Find a distraction like an activity you enjoy, a particular food you like etc.

Jen,
I can totally relate to your struggle.
I just gave up the coffin nails 1st May. Stopped the patches too at the same time !

Imaging nights are long and hard especially in terms of staying awake, resisting the urge to smoke and destroy equipment in frustration.

what's helping me is:
music,
movies (on a different laptop)
good company (very helpful)
reduced caffeine, increased nibblies and juice
playing with the three dogs
yes all this while imaging

hang in there

Yeah that's the downside of battling nicotine deprivation. For a little while you'll go for anything that's sweet. I used to get stuck into Mars bars big time. Won't last long though. Stick with it. It's a sign you're on the right path.

I have just been put on a 1100 kilojoule per day diet and in 5 days I have lost 2.6 kg hard diet to keep but I think it will be worth it. Keep your strength up and keep fighting it will get easier every day the first few weeks are the hardest if you can get through 3 weeks you are home free anyway that's how I found it.

Thats the problem with quitting. Your body is screaming at you to fill the empty hole but no matter how much you eat, the craving doesnt get satisfied does it?

Just have to grit your teeth and disperse that nervous energy with a brisk walk or a punching bag.
