Which version?
They had two versions of that song, a milder version (white album) and a heavier version (single). I like the heavier version.
Right now I am listening to Battle of Tyr/Odin's Court/Valhalla by Black Sabbath. Awesome songs. :)

Peter,
Forgetting the unforgetable "Revolution 9" off the White Album, do you have the single of Revolution on 45rpm vinyl along with the album on vinyl to compare the two?
Stardrifter_WA
16-12-2012, 10:05 PM
I have both Vinyl and CD. The single version (heavy version) of Revolution is on the Past Masters Volume Two in the Beatles Collection. The heavy version was never released on any other album other than Past Masters that comes with the Beatles collection. It was only ever released as a single on 45rpm vinyl. The White Album Revolution is an alternate edit.
The White Album I think was their best.
Cheers Peter

Yes Pat!
Lately I've been appreciating my old Teac A-450. Whacked in an old John Denver tape the other night, lovely. Awesome looking
deck the A-450, classic 70's styling, and HUGE VU meters. It has an AC induction motor and huge metal flywheel for the capstan
drive, and the whole thing is built like the proverbial masonary convenience.
Here's a pic I just shot of her on the bench (had to move the Pioneer PL-15 turntable out of the way first....).

I've been modding CD players lately too, quite interesting, and fantastic results. However, you just can't beat the feeling you get
from playing an LP or a tape. I think it all has to do with the ritual of the actions, and the 'touchability' of the physical media.
Cheers,
Jason.

you must have noticed that you needed to play back on the same deck it was recorded upon as the slightest misalignement of the playback head turned the best recording into mud no matter what deck it was recorded on!
by the way jason, what exactly are you modding on cd players...... i am intrigued!
pat
koputai
06-05-2013, 11:58 PM
Yep, she's a beautiful thing Pat. Yes, the Nakamichi's have a certain something don't they, especially the earlier beasts.
The CD I'm currently playing with (pic below) is a Marantz CD40, a fairly budget machine, but when you strip away the
cheap plastic, the transport is a Philips CDM4, and it has a TDA1541A DAC. The mods so far on this one:
Replace all electro's for new.
Remove all the tray mechanism and associated plastic (better mounts coming soon).
Direct FET output (dodgy veroboard at end of screwdriver). I've pulled out all circuitry after the DAC chip output, which
is a couple of op-amps for buffer, filters, protection etc. This has been replaced with a very simple output amp using a
single FET per channel and little else. You can see the output RCA's coming off the veroboard.
Removed oversampling. Below the red RCA you can see a switch. This bypasses the oversampling chip so the decoder
feeds the DAC directly. It's usually done by permanent wiring, but I put a switch in mine so I could A/B it. I must say
I haven't yet heard a discernable difference, but I haven't tested it much yet.

Cheers,
Jason.

ha ha jason very interesting........ i do hope you have put this on the "geek" thread......... coz...... damn thats up there!
interestingly many years ago i had heard about mods done similar to yours whereby the transports were used from DVD players and then linked to separate DAC units to be played as CD players.
cannot remember the ins and outs though

07-05-2013, 03:15 PM
Yes, there are some very good transports out there with bad electronics, so CD hacking is pretty popular. Old transport/modern DAC, or modern transport/old DAC, or even just hotted up old transport/old DAC like mine. There is a lot you can do to improve the old electronics as the chipsets are great, but all the additional circuitry hamstrings it a bit.
Cheers,
Jason.

Interesting posts on CD hacking.
I have a Cambridge Audio Azur 640v2 CD player which sounds fabulous (to me anyway) but have had transport problems.
I had it repaired once (a chap in Lane Cove - can't recall exactly where) and his remarks were that the electronics and power supply were beautifully put together (the spec was always good, but it's nice to know it's well built), but, oddly, the transport was cheap, and that I could expect to have it fail again.
Also, I remember lusting after a Nakamichi tape deck myself, back in the day ...

P.S. The best bang for buck for new players is fat output cables, don't spend a fortune but look at the finish quality and avoid 'bling'. An inexpensive speaker cable is available at most major hardware stores in the form of '8x8' low power garden light cable, oxygen free and fat enough to avoid loss as well as being cheap.

07-05-2013, 10:36 PM
No, the CD63 was a newer machine, with (sorry) a cheaper lesser transport, and an average DAC. There were a few
special versions of it, but I think they were a bit over-rated. If it's a standard one and it's faulty, it may not be
worth fixing.
However, if it's the laser that's gone you might pick a spare up on ebay for a few bucks, or even the whole transport.
If it's a KI version, people still pay decent bucks for them, so probably worth fixing.
The CD73 was very early, with a brute of a transport, very good, and a 14 bit dual DAC like my CD44 and CD54.

Seeing as we're doing the Coroner thing, I'll whack 'Punishment For Decadence' on before bed time!
I bought an old turntable last week and have dragged out a lot of vinyl from storage, mostly early
80's metal and punk (proper punk, not what has passed for punk in the last two decades!)
If you've never heard of Kratos, a 1982 private pressing 4 track EP by three young guys (still at school)
in the US, do yourself a favour. It's called 'Iron Beast'. Not sure if it's out there in the ether somewhere....

Summoning's new album (number 7), 7 years in the making.
The only way to describe this Austrian duo (Protector and Silenius) is spellbindingly epic.
Their music is based on and inspired by the writings of Tolkien. At least one of their tracks (Mirdautus Vras) has been performed in the dark language of Mordor.
While I'm still warming to the new album, here's a little bit of magic:
The Wandering Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-VmLIWvF6Q) (Old Morning's Dawn, 2013).
And, some classic Summoning:
Land of the Dead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxNXecDrhMI) (Oath Bound, 2006).
Arguably the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Protector's screech is phenomenal. And, that flute!
The bombastic, rhythmic and processional music would have fit well in the Lord of the Rings movies.
Where Hope and Daylight Die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjCNjOWIeMs) (Stronghold, 1999).
Utterly beautiful.
Music to listen to while coding or trudging through beautiful alpine forests.
I hope someone else "gets" the beauty. :)

Charlie Haden, Egberto Gismonti and Jan Garbarek an album called
'Folk Songs'....music to drink red wine to.
AstralTraveller
13-06-2013, 02:46 PM
Oh, isn't that a beautiful album! Anything by Haden and Garbarek is gold, though I know Gismonti less well. You probably already know these albums but I can recommend Garbarek's 'I Took up the Runes' and especially 'Visible World'. Also his albums with the Hilliard Ensemble, 'Officium' and 'Mnemosyne'. Haden and Pat Metheny 'Beyond the Missouri Sky' is simply one of the great albums. Love it to pieces.
Last night I was listening to a virtually unknown folk band that was playing in Cairns around 1990 - Mangrove Jack. I spent many happy Sunday afternoons in the beer garden enjoying their music. Unfortunately none of their recordings do justice to the sound they had live - too flat and hollow.
MattT
13-06-2013, 03:12 PM
This music is in a class all by itself. Sort of like the RKE 28...simple, ageless and pure! Beyond the Missouri Sky is brilliant as is so much of the recordings done by Haden with Keith Jarrett specially Arbour Zena. Also love the bass playing of Palle Danielson. Good to know you are a lover of fine music David!

What a line up indeed! There is an album titled "The Cost of Living". It's a live affair and really doesn't do his tone any justice IMHO. The track "The Cost of Living" is off the album "Michael Brecker" and that track is the most moving, perfect piece of sax playing I've ever heard! (IMHO)
You will probably have heard him before. Almost everyone who listens to contemporary music will have heard his incredible tone. He played on over 400 albums including Zappa, Steely Dan, Dire Straits, Knopfler, Sinatra, Tina Turner, Parliament, Cameo, Paul Simon and on and on. As well as his own bands and his collaborations with most of the leading jazz heavyweights.
Michael Brecker was one of THE session man from the 70's through to the 00's. Sadly he passed away in 2007.

And the original piano version? I don't know how you get more dynamics out of a piano than from a whole orchestra but there it is. I have Askenasy playing the piano version and also him conducting the PO with his, slightly revised, version of Ravel's orchestration. I've often wished there was an orchestral version with Carl Palmer on drums!!
BTW, don't rip the vinyl, buy a remastered version. They have cleaned up a lot of the 70's recording inadequacies. You know the music is worth the money!

Hope you enjoy it!
I wonder whether he plays it 'as written' or 'as cleaned up'. Apparently the original score had some clangers in it, some of them probably mistakes (eg a beat missing in a bar on the left hand but not on the right), but others perhaps deliberate (eg right hand playing a G chord while the left plays an A - mistake or deliberate dissonance?).

The Strat Pack, Live in Concert. So much talent, well worth a listen.

ABC local radio, 774 Melbourne - streaming. Thank goodness for no data limit on my home broadband, otherwise finding English-language radio would be a challenge.

Heroes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNjI7AwgY3E) - David Bowie - except this version is performed by Adrian Belew and Martha Wainwright on an episode of RockWiz. It's not perfect but I prefer this version to the original.

Giacinto Scelsi: Quatro Pezzi (astonishing Italian composer who, after a mental breakdown, wrote pieces based on single pitches, including the overtones of those pitches and various microtonal fluctuations). As awe inspiring as the night sky (clouded in Brisbane at present). His music was used a little in "Shutter Island".

Being a lover of all music, except rap, half way through watching adele live at Royal Albert Hall, unsuspecting singing voice considering the accent and holly crap can she swear
Françoise Hardy singing Le temps de l'amour in 1964.
Simply cool.

Just ordered a Caro Emerald Blu Ray from JB after listening to the Utube track Peter W posted earlier, most impressed.
Once HRH departs for work, Virgil Donati and Simon Hosford will be playing (On the VirgDVD). :D

Christmas songs, the kids love 'em. You know the ones, so good they only get played once a year. Over and over again..... :tasdevil:

FourPlay String Quartet: Now to the Future
Oh wow. And recently:
Jonathan Elias: Requiem For The Americas - Songs From The Lost World
Listened to this on NYE camping alone (partner and I) near Corryong with night noises and the burble of the creek in the background. Never heard it sound so evocative.

Been listening to her for the last six months or so non-stop.
In love.

Mental as Anything, Live at the Basement DVD, brings back good memories of the 80's when all good Aussie bands played Pub gigs.
Various works of Paganini, beautiful music to play in the background or to relax to.

Right now I'm listening to absolutely nothing, the speakers are quiet as the stereo is off and all the cd's and records are in their sleeves/cases. It is quiet except for the breeze in the trees. That will change very soon but as for now, it is quiet. Yes, having a silly moment! :P
