Hi all,

does anybody have Stellarium running on a Windows 7 64bit system?

Can Stellarium run on 64bit system, or does it have to be installed and run in Windows XP Mode on a virtual machine?

I have tried to install and run it in Windows XP Mode, but it is failing to start-up. I tried this as I'll need to be in XP Mode (32bit) to use LPI & DSI cameras.

Not sure where to go now .....

Any ideas????

Stellarium runs quite well on a windows 7 64 bit ultimate machine but it runs in 32 bit mode. When using the installer the default address is program files. This needs to be set to program files (x86) mode to get it into the correct folder.

The windows compiler "Qt creator" does not work in 64 bit mode. However if you install the windows virtual machine from microsoft you can also get a version of WindowsXP to install in it (500MB download). This virtual version of Windows XP is rather primative but Qt creator works well in it. Howevr Stellarium does not run very well in this virtual machine because the virtual screen is only S3 and can't be changed.

A more satisfactory way is to use VMwares virtual machine. Then install your original Windows XP from the distribution disk. This gives a version of windows that is far more versatile than the free windows XP.

Stellarium then will run nicely in the virtual machine as well as the X86
machine. In fact the VMware virtual framework will do anything that XP would do on the old 32bit machines. It will even run a version of the Apple Mac.

Barry,

I uninstalled Stellarium from the XP Mode and reinstalled it straight into Windows 7.

I can now startup Stellarium, have a bit of a look around, but if a try to search for something, or zoom in .... it locks up.

I've dumped the log below ..... any ideas???

Paul,
Try installing it again but this time right click on the setup.exe or whatever it's called, and pick 'run as administrator'. That should give it rights to write to the places it currently can't.

The problem is most of these old applications were written on xp as administrator and that gave them rights to read and write anywhere they pleased. That free for all has stopped and the application needs to have the authorithy to write to places it wants to write to. It's about time windows had some sort of security in place.

[edit]
Also, someone told me last week that there are now 64bit drivers available for those cameras you mention. Go look.

Hi Paul

I don't have any trouble with the search in my Windows 7 installation of stellarium but I have exactly the same problem in Windows XP on my laptop. The laptop also has Vista on it and the same program runs correctly under vista. It only happens on the laptop. My other 8 Stellarium installations work OK.

As yet I have not been able to find the problem. Every time it locks up it takes 5 minutes to get it unlocked. Stellarium appears to be caught in a loop that takes 100% of CPU time.

I will work on it.

I have found my problem. I had installed the latest screen driver for the intel 965 card (13/1/2010) but it was not suitable for my system. I reverted to the previous driver that had no problems in any case and all is well now.

Barry,

I just have an onboard Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD.

Should that be compatible, or do I have to be running any specific settings?

When Stellarium starts, the screen looks good .... when I look closer or start to zoom in, it does appear that some of the stars are square, grey and or pixelated, not round and white.

For example, if I roll forward to 3am tomorrow and look due north, I can see Sirius (white and round) to the west, Saturn to the north (a hollow circle with a grey square inside), Arcturus is NNE (a grey square) and the moon is NE (a bigger grey square with a circle inside). It's like I'm missing the object details.

I can do some searches and stellarium does not lock. Its only when I try to zoom in that it locks.

But obviously I'm having a star/object display problem.

I've uninstalled Stellarium and reinstalled as Administrator.

Any ideas?

The square stars are usually a problem with the glshaders
add the line use_glshaders = false to the [main] heading in the config.ini

I can't answer the Intel graphics question without more info. Check your system, hardware, display, drivers and find out the dirver info. That might help.

Are you installing 0.10.3 or 0.10.4. There is quite a bit of difference. 0.10.4 is on the stellarium site somewhere.

Barry,

You're a star :2thumbs::thanx:

Changing the use_glshaders to false appears to have fixed my problem.

I'll dig a bit deeper, try a few more thigns and try to replicate my problem. but it's looking very good.

I'm currently running 0.10.3 .... I was worried 0.10.4 is a bit new?

Your throughts .... should I be running the newer version?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul

There were a couple of minor bugs in the 0.10.3 release. That was one. 0.10.4 makes the default glshaders off.
There was also a problem with star names flashing on and off on some computers that has now been fixed but only in the development code after build 5982.
The latest build also puts an icon on the screen for you.

I have made a small patch in a zip file that can be used to update 0.10.4 to the latest version. More of that later

Here it is
www.iceinspace.com.au/uploads/stellariumpatch.ZIP (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/uploads/stellariumpatch.ZIP)

Download and try it on Stellarium 0.10.4. With a bit of luck this patch will have sound if you have an avance 97 sound system and will read the old scripts. Let me know if it works in case I need to modify it
