Networking Vista and XP Computers Help

I have 3 XP pcs and 1 Vista pc in a network.
From the Vista pc I can access all the fiiles on the 3 XP pcs.
The 3 XP pcs can access all the files on the other XP pcs.
All 4 pcs can access a printer connected to the Vista pc.
However I cannot get the XP pc to access the files on the Vista PC.
I can however see the Vista pc C Drive, but cannot access it.

For testing, I have turned off all the firewalls on the pcs, so I believe the problem is not with the firewalls.

The network works except for the XP to Vista connections.

Any suggestions?

You can't access the root drive of the vista machine what you need to do is share a folder on the C: on the vista machine and access that from the XP machines or if you have a second partition on the Vista machine you can share that entire drive. Then map to either the Folder or the second partition from the XP machine.

It is all to do with permissions. I had similar problems with my Windows 7 machine. You have to create permissions for this. In my case I created permissions for "everyone", or I should say a tech mate of mine did, and this enabled me to access everything on my Win 7 machine from my XP machines including the C partition.

"Everyone" is probably not a good idea. I certainly would not do it.

"Authorised Users" is better. You just have to have accounts for everyone you want to allow to connect, and they all have to have passwords. If you make the userid the same as the one they normally use it is less confusing.

Point taken Andrew, I only used Everybody because it is a home network and I am the only one that uses it.

I had a similar frustrating problem Brendan until I realised I had to share the DRIVE on the Vista machine. (Easy to share folders in a drive). I cant remember how I actually did it, which is not much help to you, but I Googled "sharing drives with vista" and some geek had the answer. It turned out simple in the end.

The prize for right solution goes to everyone.

What I realised eventually was that the vista pc didn't have a "everyone" defined on the c drive for sharing/security. All the other pcs automaticly had a "everyone". A few of minutes of messing around on working out how to define everyone, all is now ok.
