error access denied (0x5) power manager for My ups software ?

hi all

i got a UPS and ive tried to install the software for said unit (not really required but could be useful?)

the attached screenie gives me the error as in the title

i have full admistrator rights on my pc running windoze xp pro

had similar probs with other software installs as well

a pain in the neck

new xp pro install quad core 1gb ati graphics card 4 gb ram ect ect
2 x dvd players burners ect (tried both to install from)
and i was wondering if anyone here had similar software install problems or can anyone shed some light on this please

the other sofware was powerdvd xp version four

just comes up with the same Garbage access denied drive c:windows\system32 blah blah

needed that for the codecs to play dvds in windoze media player

gave up on that and installed 3rd party codecs xp pro codec pack that came with the classic media player now probs with movie dvd's

(win xp pro does not install dvd codecs, needed to pay extra (yeah Right :) )

disabled antivirus software firewall ect no change can install other sofware ?
plenty of space left on both partions (c&d Drives)

Code 5 is the generic access denied code.

Windows installer calls files randomstringofletters.rra if it wants to replace a locked file. A list is constructed in the registry of the temp file name and the real file name and when the system is rebooted the files get renamed.

Did you try to install your UPS software twice? I can't imagine the rra file would get the same name if it came from another product.

Have you rebooted since the last attempt to install something?

You might have to roll back to a previous restore point. If you do that, deleting the rra file should be OK. You might have to change the permissions on it before you can do that.

It's a real pain in the nether region, but rebooting when the installer says you need to is the only reliable way to go. Adding another product could screw up the file replacement strategy.

What if product A needs to replace fred.dll, and product B wants to do that too?

If A comes with the newer version and you install and reboot, B should see that it has an older version and not attempt to install it.

If you installed B before the reboot, both copies will get added to the rename list and you might wind up with B's version, and A won't run.

Some things refuse to install if they detect that a reboot is scheduled to complete another install.

ive rebooted several times did not help


the software is brand new never been installed before

had to manually remove powerdvd did a registry scan got rid of most of the power dvd keys

still wont install the Ups Software, i will try a restore point
not happy about that though :)

tried system restore said no way same error different file

John, Do you have a specific reason for installing the UPS software??? If not, why bother. It has absolutly no effect on how it does it's job.

Usually the software is for internal programming. If you're not intending to program the UPS, then don't bother cluttering your PC with useless software.

i am using windoze xp pro internal options in control panel power options
just to shut the puter down if i am not home

The UPS has no effect on shutting down your PC, other than to cut power, which would be as destructive as just turning off the wall outlet.

Your UPS can not "shutdown" or "Re-boot" your PC.
The UPS is to protect your PC in the event of a power outage.
Rather than the power just going off, the UPS gives a few minutes of power + a warning sound to let you shutdown your PC correctly before the UPS runs out of battery power.

That's all. Many UPS's also have a Surge Protector built in.


I have an 1100 UPS. This is for my telephone PABX system only. So that I still have a home ph if the power goes out.

Not true. The purpose of the UPS software is to notify the computer when the backup power is nearly exhausted and allow the PC to perform a controlled shutdown.

My UPS also has a program that monitors the power level of the ups and it shuts down the computer when the level gets too low.
Just a pity that it doesn't work with windoze xpeepee.
