Never used it but have a look here (http://gallery.tungstentech.com/main.php?g2_itemId=45). Talk to Sander Pool. He did some writing about the software and knows it inside out.

Houghy and I both use the full version, and it's incredible. I'm a pretty experienced Photoshop user (since version 1.0) and I'm having a bit of a time getting my head around PixInsight. It's very powerful and infinitely scriptable. Brilliant but difficult.
Great video tutorials (that'll probably be mostly relevant to the LE version as well):

please note this:
[Texto en Espaņol al final]
Hi everyone,
The PixInsight LE freeware application was first published in 2004. The free LE (Limited Edition) application has represented the initial development stages of the PixInsight project, as well as the first public release of PixInsight.
After nearly five years since the last update (LE version 1.0.2.143), today we have made the decision to discontinue PixInsight LE. We know this may be a controversial decision, but we have at least three strong reasons to take it:
- PixInsight LE is a completely obsolete application. It does not provide a minimally accurate idea of PixInsight's current state of development.
- PixInsight LE is only available on Windows, which is contrary to what we want to achieve with PixInsight. Within the goals and general philosophy behind PixInsight, it is unfair to continue maintenance of a freeware product for a single platform.
- For a long time, PixInsight LE has been counterproductive to the aspirations of the PixInsight project. PixInsight LE is very often seen as a tool which is only valid to solve a very specific problem (gradient removal with the DynamicBackgroundExtraction tool, a.k.a. DBE), and nearly nothing more. Actually, PixInsight LE, even being obsolete, provides a reasonably complete, 32-bit post-processing solution, which is able to achieve better results than other commercial products. It always amazes us when we read descriptions of how PixInsight LE is used for DBE, then the image is downgraded to 16-bit, as a necessary step to open it with other application, with the purpose to apply levels, curves, etc. That is quite disappointing because PixInsight LE offers far better histogram and curves transformations, not to mention advanced color saturation adjustments, morphological transformations, wavelet transforms, noise reduction tools, pixel math, an efficient masking system, and an accurate color management system, among other tools and features. Unfortunately, we feel that today PixInsight LE has become an obstacle to understand what PixInsight actually is, what it can do, and how it evolves.
Based on these considerations, from now on the old PixInsight LE application will no longer be available for download from our servers.
As for a new limited edition of PixInsight, we certainly have some projects in mind, but still nothing decided, and absolutely no time line available. The next PixInsight LE will not be a free product, but it of course will provide an outstanding set of advanced image processing capabilities at a very reasonable cost, and it will be available at least on Linux/X11, Mac OS X, and Windows platforms.
Thank you for your interest and support.

As long as you have a slightly warped sense of humour, I am sure you will fit in just fine. It is a darn good group, very little scrapping, and even less moderation. Lots of real clever sorts here too, so info exchange is handy.

the notice was within the last few weeks. personally i wouldnt download the LE version as it is very outdated. The new Programme is lightyears ahead - and you do get a 30 day trial period - its well worth the money

Yes, I bought it without the trial period too. I have a couple of 'problems' that I need to put up to the forum but, other than that, it seems a superb, ever growing package.
I agree with Harry's comment re: Sander. From my reading of the Forum, all the assistance he has given to various questions has always been polite and informative. Very knowledgeable bloke.

I tried this years ago, it seems to have powerfull noise modeling algorithims for specific DSLR models, and learns a particular DSLRs noise profile over time. I didnt spend much time with it. Is it mainly for listed DSLRs, or usable (usefully, for the price and bother) for pics from all cams, including generic cooled Astro CCDs?.
Edit. Opps, am I thinking of another noise reducing app :P

Hi Doug
Welcome to the Pixinsight users society
I think you will find that after a little while after you have got used to the interface, most things will come to you
And there is always the PI forum for any questions you have ( or you can ask houghy :D)

Thanks for the advice guys. I will watch Harry's videos and see if I can make some sense of it all. Getting old and a bit thick, it can take a while to sink in.
Now all I need is some clear skies and some gear delivered to get everything working.
Please post more on your experiences as you go Doug. I almost forked out for PI recently, but my credit card is still glowing red hot. Told myself to behave and digest more of Astrophotoinsight mag I've started to subscribe to.
From the many excellent examples on their website, it appears to be incredibly powerful. I expect you'd have to invest many hours learning the basics and understanding options to get great images, but then be willing to tweak and experiment to pull out the truely exceptional pics.
Anyway - would be good to hear more from the PI converts.....

well here is a real live example for you (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?p=541380#post541380) some data i have just processed:D
Impressive David.
Are you happy you've pulled out details here that might have been difficult with your old processing routine?

considering i stuffed up the star masking routine in the hdr section of the process its not too bad, but i look forward to learning how to do that and redoing the image - BTW that was my first go at it, so i can repro now:rofl:
