Is there a programme around that lets me input the ep and telescope details then gives the resulting power? :confused2:

By "power", do you mean magnification? Isn't the magnification just the scope's focal length divided by the eyepiece? So your Orion 102 f/7 has a focal length of about 700mm, and if you used your 15mm eyepiece in it, your magnification would be 700/15 = 46.6.

Gavan,
Troy is correct, but you can also simulate it in Stellarium with the Eyepiece plugin
You just edit the module ini file (text file) and load in the telescope and EPs of your choice and it will produce a planetarium view of your selected optics and allow you to swap between 10 of them

I originally create a spreadsheet of all my eye pieces (and possible future purchases) that calculated various specs for my 10" DOB, and used it to compare and get an idea of the differences.
I've now installed that ocular plug-in which now will make it so much easier.
Thanks for the tip Rally. :D

See the link in my signature. Allows you to quickly calculate the magnification, exit pupil and true field of view for a particular eyepiece. Very handy.

Troy is spot on. You really shouldn't need a calculator to work this out, it's very straightforward.
