Nebula Hunting

Are there any resources online to find any type of DSO if you input a range of RA values. I found the NGC website but you query their database by entering a known object. At best it gives you other adjacents or nearby objects. Is there a way to query those DSO databases another way? Thanks for any tips.

I don't know of any particular site that would do exactly this. However all the databases I have seen have fields listing all the data you need. Why not write your own filter program. I could do it in Qbasic but not one of the more user friendly languages.

In Cartes du Ceil if you right click on a object near the RA/Dec in which you are interested, and choose the "About objectname", the window that pops up has a "Neighbour" button. Read the help to choose what is to appear in the list. You can decide what type of object and the limiting magnitude.

I just tried it on M31 and with the default settings the list included M34, NGC224, NGC1039, 8 variable stars, 8 variable stars, and 8 stars in the BSC.

The ngc2000.dat in stellarium is ascii, fields a tab spaced
entries are LF/CR

If that is not suitable I have one that I prepared for an old program with similar data.

Try the Simbad site. A little bit technical but very powerful with links to aladin images.

Hi Marc
While I had a spare couple of hours this afternoon I wrote a little fillter program to read out all the NGC an IC objects from the stellarium ngc2000.dat. Sorted by any area in square degrees and selecting either all, galaxies, nebulae or clusters that lie between a given range of magnitudes or size.

Works like magic. I will polish it up and take it to Wiruna
