My favourite browser, Opera, is now updated to version 10. I like this application because it combines my browsing and mail requirements into one app - negating the need to run two separate applications. Mail resides in a tab, just like any other web page - and it's a fully-featured multi-account IMAP/POP client, not just webmail. A nice clean look too for the latest version. Very fast and on a smaller footprint than Firefox.

Thanks Chris, I've been using Opera on all my machines for years. I've always loved the intelligent tabs system Love this new version..nice looking interface.

I was a big fan of Opera, stopped using it when they started asking money for it, which was a fair while back now.
Good to see they came to their senses and offer it for free again.

I've been using Opera for awhile (>2 years) and like it.
Never quite got to setup the mail function, have to try.
NAB banking doesn't like it but most everything else does.

Try setting it to identify itself, for that one website, as Firefox or IE, or whatever the bank wants:

Tools/Quick Preferences/Edit Site Preferences/Network/Browser Identification

Technically, the best browser on the market, at least security wise. Has the least amount of security flaws of any browser of the past Ten years. UI is a bit ugly, but it is fast. I tend to use FireFox, only cos I'm lazy, but I do prefer Opera, at least on the Windows platform. On Linux, it's Konqueror or lynx.

You probably haven't downloaded and installed version 10 yet Dave. In my mind it's the cleanest and neatest out there.

I think I'm on version 9 @ home. I also have firefox, ie, safari on my Windows box, and access to a variety of Linux based browsers via VMs.

Yet, we're not talking about v9. This thread is about v10.

Better than Safari 4 Chris? I might take a look.

"Better" is a pretty subjective term I guess Gary. Better than what in Safari 4? The Opera browser is pretty trick in many departments, and a lot of current, common features found in the mainstream browsers came from Opera. Spatial navigation, tabs, mouse gestures, built-in BitTorrent, IRC and mail clients, SpeedDial etc, and other niceties are Opera mainstays. Have been for a while. Its built-in phishing and malware protection are state of the art, and it uses a very strong encryption algorithm. It's very good if you're a keyboard-centric user too, i.e. nearly everything about Opera can be controlled from the keyboard.

Which do I prefer? I prefer Opera to Safari. Always have. I'm a keen Mac user (in the graphics trade you can't go past them) and I still encourage my people to use Opera over Safari which is the native Mac browser.

Give it a go.

Just upgraded. I was making a generalised comment about Opera being not the best UI wise. Looks like 10 is a nice improvement in this respect, at least from the very quick play that I just had. Might even make it my default browser.

Downloaded it Chris, it is different, but then again so is anything.
I'll tinker with it.

How do I make Oprera the default browser?

Jacob - on Vista it's

Control Panel/Programs/Default Programs/Set Default Programs

Choose Opera and make it default by hitting "Set this program as default".

Thank Chris.
I was looking in the internet option and this only allows setting to IE!
Funny that !!!!!!

Trying it now Chris. Seems weird having Mail included, I am sort of hedging my bets at the moment, Mail and Opera Mail, scardy cat I am.
Is there an option like Safari where it stores your more opened sites? The obscure "once in a blue moon" ones I can dig for, but it would be nice to keep the " quite often" ones.

I use Opera for very looong time...great browser!

Speed dial! I use to make my own before they "invented" it.

gbeal,

Try speed dial in Opera, you'll like it. Just open Opera click on the + next to open page tab and you'll see those squares in the page...very simple to set up.

cheers

Cheers Bob, she's all different as you probably know, and us old coots take change very hard.

Gary - it's easy. Safari 4's "Top Sites" feature is very similar now. Opera has had it for ages, and it's no different really.
