Looking for some advise on computer ram.

One of our computers has 1 GB of ram in slot 1 and slot 2 is empty, I would like to put another 1 GB in the empty slot.

The ram in slot 1 is 1GB DDR2 667MHZ PC2 - 5300 - 555.

The closest I have been able to find on-line is -
1 GB DDR2 667MHZ PC2 - 5300 - 640

Question 1. is will the above ram be compatible seeing it is 640 and not 555.

Question 2. is when I count the pins on the bottom of our existing ram there are 120. --- The number of pins on the new ram are 240.

Does this mean there are 120 pins on each side making 240 or do I have it all wrong.

Hoping someone can help

David

I think you'll be safe with the one you've found. The critical bits match. I'm not sure what that extra 3 digit number is on the end, never noticed it before. 120 would be 240 pins, they are double sided.

Have you tried searching on static ice? that'll give you a good impression of what's available:

Thanks Roger at least now I know about the pins, had trouble enough trying to count them. Will check out static ice, thanks for the link.

I was thinking the 555(5-5-5) could be the latency figures... but then the 640(6-4-0) didn't make sense, 0 latency?

Agree, the one you've found should be fine.

The 555 was on the label of the ram when I removed it to check the amount of pins. Read on an overseas forum that the 640 ( what ever it is ) should be backward compatible with the 555.

A bit beyond my computer knowledge but seems like it will be okay.

Thanks for your imput Simon
