I recieved an email from the CWAS people...
Hello all,
Firstly, thank you for entering your images in the 2009 CWAS "David Malin
Awards". We had a near record number of entries this year. All the images
received will be exhibited at the CSIRO Parkes Observatory Visitors Centre
for the entire month of July and especially during the CWAS AstroFest and
Parkes Observatory Open Days on 18-19 July.
The judging of the entries has been completed by Dr David Malin. Those
entrants who have been awarded prizes will be notified shortly.
On behalf of the CWAS AstroFest Organising Committee, I thank you again for
your contributions to this year's "David Malin Awards".
Regards, John Sarkissian

judging seems to be over, and its somewhat quiet, last year created quite a bit of interest. perhaps no-one entered ? So did you have a go, i put one in for the first time, i thought id dip my toe in just to see how it all went, no expectations of getting even a place, but thought the experience might be interesting. it seems to be the one that creates the most attentionfor those who went in it in previous years roughly what is the entry numbers... ive only seen a pic from mikes website showing a couple dozen pics at most (presume they are the winners). any info apreciated just want to knowhow it all works. clive.

I was privileged enough to get a email for one of my images. There is a story behind it, which makes it even more amazing for me. Congratulations to the other imagers that made the grade, i will be more than happy with an honorable mention (I am assuming it is that). this is the first time i have entered in this competition and to get recognition in the International Year of Astronomy is something special. BTW i havent told my wife yet

Congrates to all who have had their work recognised in this the International Year of Astronomy.
To have your work recognised in anyway at all by the Pavarotti of Astrophotography, regardless of whether you are the overall winner, receive a category win or even an honorable mention means you are deffinitely a real astrophotgrapher.
The awards dinner should be a hoot :D

Ok just re-thought these choice of words ... we are "all" real astrophotographers, I just meant that to have something you have done recognised by David is pretty cool and gives just that bit more meaning to and reward for all the long hours out at the scope and in front of the computer... :bashcomp: :)

Yes Mike, i sort of gathered what you meant by what you wrote, though i do think that there are some out there who take excellent images and only show them to people very close to them. I really believe that there are is a lot of hidden and undiscovered talent out there in photon land....
You and Eddie, Peter, Fred etc who are legends also help make it the event that it is.
I just told the wife - she rolled her eyes........:rolleyes:
strongmanmike
20-06-2009, 02:56 PM
Legends..? don't you have to be mythical and indeed dead to qualify for that title
Tell her at least entering didn't cost as much as the internal garage dome
of course...taking the whole family to Parkes = accomodation and meals, pertol etc might though :P

Congratulations to all of you very clever folks.
I have just been perusing the CWAS site and looking at last years winning and honourably mentioned entries alongside pics of the people behind the pics - lots of familiar names who DO have faces. Very much looking foreward to seeing this years offerings of delight.

oh that is cruel, and not every garage has its own internal dome:P
as for going. not sure the family is going to sydney and the blue mountains:shrug:
Peter Ward
20-06-2009, 04:28 PM
Legend? Nah....I have no expectations this year due sheer lack of data (how drab has this Sydney weather been) but it will be great to catch up with the usual list of suspects at Parkes over a beer or two!
strongmanmike
20-06-2009, 05:12 PM
Wadaya mean no expectations???..you are already an award winner in your category, be happy with that, the rest is semantics really.
and yes, drinking a few beers while listening to Fred Watson strum his guitar is a bonus too

Really? I thought Eddie T, the team from Sydney Obs and pro shooters from the SMH had also entered (well, OK I know they did)
Nup...it's not over 'till Pavarotti sings :)

from the grave..........;) it would be good to see all the entries:D

20-06-2009, 06:28 PM
No I meant your a winner just for being notified ya dope :doh:Who takes out the category is really only icing on the cake and it could usually go to just about any of the "finalists" (ie all those who have been notified). You know, like trying to pick your best from this selection:

Oh and if your nice you might even get to hear some Pavarotti impersonations from yours truly..Nessun Dorma! :D

You've got a bit of a gradient in that image that you might need to fix with some proper flats. :P

I had hoped to take advantage of my pretty good 'office window' view of the outside world for this year's CWAS twilight theme.
For various reasons the opportunity never presented itself.
That said, with twilight still some 40 minutes away, mother nature displayed this little gem...

Peter,
I've seen those things several times while flying. What are they called, and, why do they occur?
I think you can simulate them in that software called Halo.
Beautiful photograph.

Congrats guys,
I am betting that Houghy won the solar system award with his Moon. A Lunar eclipse won last year and David was most impressed by it. So you might have won houghy. After last year I have no expectations whatsoever. Being mentioned is good.
Congrats again to all the winners.

Thanks Paul, I really think it will be a highly commended as some of the solar system images i have seen from many other people over the past 24months, including yourself, have been brilliant images, assuming of course that they have been entered. Only time will tell?

Not sure yet, probably be me and the missus? There is plenty of accomodation available in Parkes, CWAS isn't exactly fireworks on Sydney Harbour

I will not be there either. In China at the time and preparing for the Eclipse of the century. Hopefully getting next years winning solar system entry.:P
So Strongman, can't make it this time big guy, wanted to be there and I just know we would have got kicked out again at the end of the night. I could feel some hi jinx coming on too. You can accept my award for me, try to think of something gracious to say won't you?:rofl:Just think what I would say.:eyepop::lol: Just make sure they send it to me after you accept it.
Have a great time all, wish I could be there but I think I will take the eclipse over the Malins.

30-06-2009, 10:58 PM
NO probs Paul, that's three awards I will be accepting, mine, yours and Houghy's, I will be sure to keep the best camera for myself too and give you guys the dregs
I think there will be an Italian flavour to the evening so I am dusting off my opera voice just in case, although it was written some 200yrs after his death, I am sure Galileo would have liked the aria Nessun Dorma, it even mentions looking at the stars too.

I was lucky enough to get a congratulations email as well.
Well done every one else. As others have said, a real honour to get recognition from DM for your images (HM or whatever).
I am planning on having a look over the dish Sat afternoon so may see some of you there, if not at the dinner.
Rgds, and all the best to everyone in the "finals".

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it this weekend after all :(
I'm very disappointed, especially because I wanted to check out the Dish as part of the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 celebrations - not to mention enjoy an Astrofest dinner with friends from IceInSpace.
I found out this morning I have to go to Melbourne for work next week (ALL WEEK), and after being away on the Sunshine Coast last week (for 3 nights), it was just too much to put my family through to be away this weekend as well.
So I'll spend the weekend at home and fly off to Melbourne on Monday morning :(
I hope you guys have a great time and I can't wait to see the pics.
