Can you use the HD on a networked PC to backup

A question about system backups and home (wired) networks:


If I have a 5-way switch sharing my Broadband Wired LAN in my
house and other PCs show up and allow file sharing...
can I use the drive(s) on another PC as the destination for
a system backup of the main PC?

Hi Steve,
Yes you can. As long as the machine providing the backup file has write access to the target machine, it will be possible.
If using XP, you may need to disable "simple file sharing".
You may also need to set "write permissions" on the target pc.(username & password)

If you havent already networked the pc's you'll need to do that first. Start/settings/network connection the look to the left of the page you will see "Set up a home or small office network" click on that and follow the steps. When you get to the last step it will ask you to insert a disk that you put in the other pc. click no thanks and reboot the computer. Do the same on the othe pc and make sure the workgroup name is the same as the other pc. reboot that pc and you should be right to go.

On each of the pcs that you have on the net work creat a folder on each of them on your c drive or my docs. right click over the folder and go to properties/sharing tab and tick the box's. Now one each of the pc's "my shared folder you should be able to pass files between pc's by dragging them to the various folders.

btw, if you are going to be transfering large amounts of data over an 100mb network, it's going to be slow.
