XP Welcome Screen

Can anyone help me?
For some reason, when I turn on my PC the Windows screen with the little blue squares travelling left to right sits there for five or so passes (normal) then the blue welcome screen hangs there for about one minute and five seconds before the desktop appears(not normal). What has happened? Is it easily fixed or has something deep and deadly happened to Bill's software?
Everything else works fine and all apps work OK (including astro stuff).

Actually Nev, this is normal especially if you have just installed some type of hardware or Software. You will find a Vanilla install of XP wont do this, as basically its just the O/S that loads, but the more you put on there, the more liable this is to happen. My Aspire One sits on the welcome screen for about the same amount of time, but is rock solid.

What I don't understand is that I have changed or added nothing lately.
It suddenly started happening yesterday. Ah well, I suppose it's one of life's little mysteries. I am beginning to look upon it as my version of the Blue Screen of Death ( which I have only seen once on this PC)

Have you installed any windows updates of late? i find these tend to be a major culprit for this kinda thing ...

I did an update of my internet security suite on wednesday and also a microsoft update so I did a system restore to a previous date. The welcome screen was present for only 30 secs so I guess it was something in the microsoft update. Turning off the Internet security suite ( with the internet disconnected!) makes no difference.
I blame it all on Bill!!

Nev - it's probably something loading into memory at startup. If you boot into Windows XP in safe mode (press and hold the F8 key as soon as you first seen the Windows logo), is it also slow? You can also do a diagnostic startup too - start > run > type in "msconfig.exe" without the quotes of course, general tab. A selective startup might be even better in this case, cos you can turn things on and off to try and pinpoint what might be causing the problem. I bet it's a driver of some sort.
